Agate grey windows ?

Hi I have just moved into a 1920’s semi. White rendered, replacing the windows and storm porch with casement flush style. Want to try and preserve the traditional look of the house. The internal front door is original and a colour is similar to agate grey. not sure what looks better -white windows with black facia soffit and storm porch door. Or agate grey windows and storm porch door. And of the latter - is agate grey facia and soffit better than black. Head mashed . Ant for the life of me get a visualiser tool to work either .

Please don't go for grey or black windows. It'll age horribly (the look already is).

Thisbastardcomputer · 28/08/2025 07:49

I think it would look nice

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 28/08/2025 07:49

If that photo is of the current house, why change it?
With flush casement frames you may end up with thicker frames and so less light in the house.

TeaAndStrumpets · 28/08/2025 08:41

It's a nice soft colour. We have it in aluminium.

caramac04 · 28/08/2025 08:43

Agate grey has almost a greenish hue and is in keeping with your house.
I think I would stick with black soffits.

SunnySideDeepDown · 28/08/2025 09:00

White is classic and lasts the test of time.

Grey and black window frames are already on the way out so your house would look dated very quickly.

The best styled houses are those that are in keeping with their own eras. Grey windows on old houses could look very naff - white all the way.

StreetStrife · 28/08/2025 09:23

I'm not sure everyone knows what colour agate grey actually is when they make anti-grey comments. I think it's not going to age the same way as anthracite.

I have seen houses like yours with agate grey and I think they look lovely. Black fascias will look fine, or matching. I'd probably go for black to ground it a little, but I do like and use the adage about using black somewhere in every room.

I've noticed that when houses are all done up with brand new white windows I often find myself thinking it looks a bit cold and bland, and that they've missed a trick. Especially with white render, a different colour frame really does look better than white. A house nearby has agate on the front windows and white on the back that you can see from the park. The front looks much softer and better.

So go for it if you like the look. There's no such thing as timeless in homes or fashion. There will always be newer updates to styles.

Also, agate grey with the red brick of your driveway will look great, really welcoming.

Geneticsbunny · 28/08/2025 09:55

I think verdigris green would look amazing on a house that age. Very 1930s.

Me too! I have a soft spot for houses of that era. If this was more Deco, I'd say white windows, but with the leaded panes it's more of a traditional style and the green would definitely be in keeping.

Here's one on a bigger scale, OP! Lucky you having such a nice house.

I agree that agate grey is a nice soft grey/green colour unlike anthracite. Will go nicely with the soft offwhite of the render. (Thankfully not bright white).

I would go for either agate grey windows and soffits throughout or white throughout (offwhite would be better). I wouldn’t mix with black, that’s a very harsh look IMO.

Why casement windows if you want to preserve the character, shouldn’t it be multi pane with a transom like the existing?

Ooh, yes. There is a 30s house near me with Chartwell green windows and it looks great.

Grey windows look really grim. Stick with white! (Or go for green or blue if you really need to change them)

Fordy72 · 28/08/2025 10:13

Thank you all so much for your responses! Most grateful. Just to be really clear I’m not thinking about dark grey or even mid grey and I’m not looking at black windows either. . Agate grey is the softer more heritage look . I’ve added pic below of the style of window im going for

No you haven't... 😉

Grey is horrible. So miserable.
That light green posted above looks lovely and far more in keeping with the house.

LibertyLily · 28/08/2025 11:08

Out of the options given I'd go for agate grey (including the fascia/soffits). Definitely not white or black for any of it. But I'd prefer the more obvious green linked by @Beachtastic.

Our last-but-one house was a detached Victorian which had been extended in Arts & Crafts style in the 1920s. I painted the 20+ (mostly casement) Crittall windows in F&B Green Smoke - took me forever, but it looked fab with the original very pale grey render.

PosiePetal · 28/08/2025 11:10

Grey is going to date terribly; it already is. Go classic and bold black and white for sure.

slidingsideways · 28/08/2025 11:20

For anyone who is anti grey, this is what agate grey looks like on a white house. I think it’s much nicer than white upvc on white, it’s more of a grey-green heritage colour. When the white of the house is a slightly different to the white windows which it inevitably is, I’d go for some contrast. Photo from Anglian Windows website, to give them credit!

Ahhh, that looks really nice!

I wasn't sure what agate grey looked like, but I got this when I looked it up (Essex Trade Windows site), which is not quite so pretty.

Stick with white windows or go for the colour @slidingsideways posted

1920s is the deco period so grey would be very out of keeping to the era.

appreciate sideways colour has ‘grey’ in the name but it’s more a light green. Which is very art deco

StreetStrife · 28/08/2025 13:09

On a different note, I've just seen a 70s house that's recently had a new porch and windows in anthracite, with an off white render and some yellowish brick of the era. It looked amazing. A blanket anti-grey, white is timeless mindset really fails to appreciate the many different styles of home. The previously white windows didn't look anywhere near as good.

Fordy72 · 28/08/2025 14:35

thanks again for all the feedback and noted I didn’t add the pic of the style of window I was looking at. I have looked closely at the area I am on and there is a lot of properties around 20’s -30’s and many have this style of window some wood some upvc. It’s so hard to decide between white or what I think (?) is a heritage style grey. But note all feedback given and I’m continuing to ponder ! See below for the style of replacement I’m considering
