Selling!!

We bought our first home around 3 years ago which needed some work doing (replaster, rewire, garden was a complete jungle etc)
We’re now thinking of moving in a few years and wondering if these issues would be a problem when coming to sell. We’ve never sold a house before so are wanting to get as much info as possible and I’m also very anxious that no one will want to buy our house because of these issues!

the only issues we have with our home really is a pesky weed/growing plant that likes to climb up our neighbours drainpipe and onto our roof. We’ve had this removed a few times but it comes back. We’ve spoken to the neighbours who have been helpful but I’m panicking that this would put someone off buying??

By the time we come to sell I’m hoping this issue will be a distant memory but will we have to declare this issue even if it’s no longer an issue when we come to sell?

Have you identified the plant, OP?

noideareno · 27/08/2025 22:20

It’s some sort of ivy/bindweed I think but not 100% sure

Ah, you're all right then. As long as it's not Himalayan Balsam or Japanese Knotweed no one is going to care about a bit of ivy/bindweed!

I got myself into a right tiz earlier worrying about it being Japanese knotweed but from what I’ve read it isn’t a climbing plant? Ours looks more like bindweed to me but I’m not an expert

If it’s climbing up your property why don’t you just spray it with weed killer
and keep doing so till it stops coming back

That’s what we have done this time. We’ve removed it and sprayed any of the little bits that are left so I’m hoping and praying it doesn’t come back. It seems to
come back every spring

If it comes back the best thing to do is not to remove it. Leave it in place and get the weed killer on as many leaves as possible. It goes down the stork and kills the roots.

Leave it for a while till it’s obviously dead and then remove
You need max leaf coverage
Good luck

Have you resolved the issues the house had 3 years ago with replastering, rewiring and sorting out the garden?

Yeah we’ve rewired, replastered and gutted the garden. Garden is still a work in progress though :)

That's good ... then the fact it needed rewiring and replastering 3 years ago won't affect resale when you come to move.

Buyers only really look at the current condition of the house when deciding if it is somewhere they would be interested in buying/whether the price seems fair.

I am in the process of selling my late parents' home. Yes it will put some people off, but equally some people will enjoy the challenge of getting rid of it, or just be doing the garden anyway and so digging it up comes naturally.

Getting rid of what?
