How would you allocate these bedrooms?

DH and I have 4 bedrooms. 3 double (1 large, 1 en suite) plus a single room.

Currently DH has double as his study, we have the large double, en suite double is guest room and 1 year old has single room.

I wfh but currently use the dining table which isn’t ideal. DH wfh less but has a lot of ‘stuff’ living in the study too.

Im due DC2 soon. We are not sure how to shuffle the bedrooms.

Current thoughts are; DC share double, guest room is en suite double, DH moves to single room.

But I’m worried about the DC sharing especially as DS1 is an amazing sleeper and I don’t want him to be disrupted. Plus the layout of the double room wouldn’t really accommodate two cots/cot beds very well.

What would you do? Ideally we need a room for guests (my parents stay every couple of months for a few nights) and we do need a study which DH and I will hot desk in.

Can you share an office?

MellowPinkDeer · 26/08/2025 21:08

Why do you need a guest room all the time???

id Use the en-suite room for me, the biggest double for the guest / office space and then the baby in the small room.

only a lunatic would have the kids sharing and an empty room for the most part of the rest of time!

Exactly this!

You probably need to double up the guest room.

PamIsAVolleyballChamp · 26/08/2025 21:09

Why does dh need a study? Can guest room not just be.study/office?

Pinkstuffs · 26/08/2025 21:11

We can share a study but it will be used daily so I wouldn’t really want a bed in there as well? I think it looks odd on calls etc with a bed in the background.

We deliberately moved out of the en-suite room as it’s above the extremely well insulated kitchen and it’s really hot!

I wouldn’t be keeping a guest bedroom free. Can your dh not use the guest room as a study and get some clever storage?

TimetoGetUpNow · 26/08/2025 21:12

I wouldn’t keep a double with en-suite empty for use a few nights every couple of months.

DH doesn’t get an entire double room for WFH while you WFH more but on the dining table!

En suite for you and DH
One double older child
single for the baby (but baby gets a bigger room later on)
Other double is study plus guest room (for now).
DH gets the study while you are on mat leave, but then you get the study when you’re back at work and he has to go to the office/ gets the dining room.

Nimbus3000 · 26/08/2025 21:13

I would also look at combining the guest room/study and having the other bedrooms for your household. I expect it's nice for your parents and guests to have the en suite but if you having that frees up the bigger room as the combined space it might be worth it overall.

Alternatively, could you leave the guest room as is, you and DH have the double, single as the study and then the bigger double as a shared children's room. Might it be possible to partition the room or set it up to minimise disruption between the children?

Just put a background on zoom/teams.

Can you fit a small double in the single
toom or is it very small? Otherwise I’d have a double for you, one for each child and the small as an office. I’d have a day bed in one of the doubles and pull that out, only bunking the kids up when we had visitors.

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 26/08/2025 21:17

En suite room for you
Next biggest room as study cum spare room - and put a Teams background on.
Next room for DC1
Small room for DC2

IfYoureLeavingTakeMeToo · 26/08/2025 21:17

Or a Murphy bed

@Pinkstuffs just blur the background in Teams or Zoom or whatever you use, or use one of the backgrounds provided. Bed won’t be visible

HeidiLite · 26/08/2025 21:27

We have office/ guest room and it works fine, we have a comfortable sofa bed that folds out to a king size. Also means that office is kept tidy, work stuff put away and not laying around all over.

OttersAreMySpiritAnimal · 26/08/2025 21:30

Or a sofa bed.
double up the home office and guest room definitely. Or consider if the lounge could do double duty with a desk or a sofa bed.
The kids will be fine in the single and smallest double for years. And could share for a few years once sleep routines are settled.
I couldn't sleep in a room that was too hot so I think you should pick the room you feel more comfortable in. Then one each to the kids, and the last as the guest room/office.

Hayley1256 · 26/08/2025 21:36

Large double- you and DH
Double - DC1
Single - DC 2
En Suite - Study but nice sofa-bed for guests

cornflourblue · 26/08/2025 21:43

Someone told me years ago not to waste a room that is only used occasionally.

Definitely double up a bedroom and office - surely everyone blurs/uses a different background on Teams calls?

Bitzee · 26/08/2025 21:52

Ensuite room for you
Double 1 is a guest room / office, maybe a sofa bed you can pop out as needed and also blur your background
Double 2 for DC1
Single for the baby
