How much better is a semi detached?

I wasn’t looking to move for about another two years but the neighbours on both sides of a mid terrace have turned into minor, not terrible but annoying people.
One I can completely ignore the other is a little harder. Noisy and filling the street with guests cars
Just wondering if I’m moving into a semi detached property it’s going to have the potential to be isn’t it?
Or can anybody reassure me it’s significantly better

It won’t stop your neighbours being noisy or filling the road with their guests’ cars. I do however find having direct access to our garden from the street very useful.

Anywhere can have problem neighbours...however, you only have to share a wall with one set in a semi!

It’s pot luck a semi picks up sound too but only on one side. Although it’s easier to muffle the sound if one side only

I’m trying to Weigh it all up I’ve got the usual five grand of moving costs but then it would be an additional 50 for a semi detached
That would of course get me direct access to the garden and a driveway even if it’s not a garage but maybe a garage if I’m lucky

Semi better.

So much better! I went from end terrace to semi detached and then terraced. I lasted 4 years in terraced. Never, ever again!

Bless you, thank you
I had never lived in a terraced before it’s been a bit of a shock. I know I’m not a brilliant neighbour but everything I do is always for the benefit of everyone if that makes sense ?
I’m repairing shared walls and tidying up the garden that kind of thing and far from gratitude. I’m getting abuse for it.

If you do get a semi, then ‘halls-adjoining’ would further limit noise potential.
Downstairs, anyway.

Noelshighflyingturds · 24/08/2025 15:08

Yeah, I don’t think I would go for a semi-detached bungalow again for that very reason
Next Door decided to put the bathroom next to the baby’s bedroom 🤦‍♀️

OP, How noisy can their bathroom be? 🤣

whirlyhead · 24/08/2025 15:14

I moved from terraced to detached with a big garden. The terrace was way quieter - my neighbour on one side here loves to play music loudly outside and despite all the houses here having big gardens there’s always someone pruning trees, pressure washing their solar panels or playing music…

and to add to it all I have a school opposite.

Sturtium · 24/08/2025 15:32

It’s very quiet in my terrace. It really does depend on who your neighbours are, unfortunately. Statistically, a semi should cut your chances of noise!

Toilet flushing during the night when everywhere else is silent is Loud
Additionally, he works shifts so he tends to have a shower when he gets in from work at 11 pm again you hear it when the rest of the house is silent.
Definitely lots to consider in terms of layout

If you go for a semi try to go for halls together with the bathroom or 3rd bed adjoining upstairs. My parents had this many years ago and it was great as their lounge and feo bedroom were on the outer walls. They are quite rare though but definitely worth it if you can find one.

This is the worry, of course it can always get worse.
At least with the current scenario they are both teachers either side of me so presumably whilst they might be a bit sociable during the school holidays they should be absolutely knackered during term time which is when I need them to be quiet for the kids.
I think I’ll give it to Christmas before making a decision

I grew up in a semi, it wasn't particularly noisy and we couldn't hear much through the walls unless someone was being excessively noisy,
We bought an end terrace and couldn't hear much there either unless someone played piano as that was against the shared wall.
Both of those houses were old and had thick walls.
Live in a detached now, so no noise, but the house is harder to heat and very cold in winter.
