Help me rejig my weird tiny shower room layout!

Hello smart women of Mumsnet. I have recently moved into a new flat, and I love it but I’d like to rejig the shower room and it’s a bit tricky due to the small size, the wide window and the need for a non-standard door.

It currently has a large shower cubicle straight in front of you as you walk in. This cubicle covers nearly half the window, and means the access into the toilet and sink area is a bit tight.

Toilet and sink are at the other side of the bathroom.

The room has an internal sliding door and can’t have a normal door due to hallway layout. However, I am wondering if I could maybe replace the sliding door (which takes up a lot of bathroom wall space) with a folding door that folds outwards.

It feels like the most sensible place for a shower would be across the room where toilet and sink currently are. Then move toilet to where shower is, and maybe have a sink on some kind of unit in front of the (frosted) window.

This would involve moving the soil waste pipe from one side of the room to the other. Plumber says it’s technically possible but very expensive!

I’m wondering if there’s another way to rejig the room without moving the loo! My friend suggested turning it into a wet room, but is there a way to do that without all the sanitaryware/windowsills getting covered in water every time you have a shower?? Some kind of simple glass screen somewhere perhaps?

I’m attaching a diagram. If any wise women have any suggestions, that would be extremely helpful. Thanks for reading.

Nice big shower
Plenty of room between shower and WC

Can you have the sliding door next to the loo (ie top right) and put the shower in the top left corner?

cushionfiend · 23/08/2025 16:39

Sadly the door has to remain in its current position.

That still covers half the window with the shower.

Unless you’ve got the floor depth to take the foul drainage out to the stack there’s not much more you can do

Assume there is a room behind the right hand half of the top wall? How much hall width do you have on the left hand half of the top wall where a door would go?

Plantatreetoday · 23/08/2025 16:42

If you have then swap the two around

parietal · 23/08/2025 16:42

You could swap the shower and the sink to get a bigger space just in front of the door. It might make the space for the toilet narrow though.

Plantatreetoday · 23/08/2025 16:43

Let’s have a plan of the house and we can all look at a complete relocation

titchy · 23/08/2025 16:43

Would a Japanese bath work instead of the shower?

Pomegranatemum · 23/08/2025 16:45

Would one of the funny toilets with a sink built into the back help? On account of being able to lose the sink and therefore free up room space.

Yep 1300 is too tight for those two
remember you need a cistern in that space aswell
unless you offset the cistern at right angles and even then you’ll only have 600 for the WC. That’s a squeeze between walls even for the average adult and that’s assuming a slim 700 shower

The shower room is in a funny little extension that was added on to the front of the building when it was converted from 1 house into 2 flats. So the hall leading to the shower room is quite narrow. Kitchen is behind - see new pic.

Yes, was wondering same - I could maybe just squeeze a 700 wide shower space in there. Might be a bit tight for the loo though!

Could ypu swap the loo and sink over to give you more space to get in?

Too tight and remember the cistern too. That’s 500 wide

BludeyNora · 23/08/2025 17:15

Had another thought.

We have a narrow shower thanks to our builder's fuck up. It is 650 wide by 1300 long. It is totally fine size wise. Yes there are wider showers. Maybe we have got used to it. But I never think it is too small. Actually, I don't think we'd miss a bit of length if needed.

So could you maybe:
Move the loo to where the sink is.
Move the shower to the loo corner. Something narrow 650/700 wide and as long as you can fit in.. it may mean the door track being enclosed...or as you say, a folding one.
Move the sink to the shower spot.

With a narrower shower tray you could certainly fit both loo and shower in.

Excuse the bathroom muck..pic attached.

My ensuite is 1180 x 2690.
I've got a 1200 shower tray along the short wall (removed some of the plaster at the bottom to get it in), loo opposite & sink under the window on the long wall, opposite door on other long wall.
My door opens outwards, which I see you can't do.

I've done my loo & sink with cabinets, but previously they were just a loo with exposed cistern & pedestal sink.

I would put the shower where the loo and sink are. It's a no brainier and anything else is a huge compromise and you will regret it. If you have a sliding shower door like this then you can put the loo right next to the shower. If you take a bit off the wall where the window is to make some shower nooks then you can also box the toilet pipe in to get the drop you need and then have it going out of the same wall as it currently does which will be cheaper

We’ve just downsized and looking at remodelling a very small bathroom.
Bathroom designer has advised fitted furniture to save space. There is some currently but we will be putting cabinets in that aren’t as deep.
Why not get some quotes from bathroom designers? They will measure, produce plans and a quote. You can then compare and source your own cabinets etc and find a fitter yourself.

If you move the shower to the wall where the toilet and sink are then you should have room to change the door for a normal one which opens against the wall. Toilet can then go next to the shower on the same wall as the door and the sink can go opposite the door. Should be room for a 1200 x 800 walk in shower this way and still plenty of room for a standard vanity unit and toilet.

@Reallybadidea and @Geneticsbunny - is this what you mean? Could be a goer!
