Spider infestation in new builds?

Have my upstairs windows open as otherwise it’s too hot. Not massively open just the crack. But oh my god the spiders. Each day I come home to about 5 new spiders in my bedroom. Not huge but also not just little daddy long legs type. Actual spiders. The outsides of my windows are full of them, so I can see where they’re coming from. Is this normal for new builds? They’re everywhere! Can’t leave anything on the floor, once I pick it up there will be a spider underneath. Webs everywhere too

I dont think spiders care about the age of the house.

KnickerlessFlannel · 23/08/2025 14:01

What was there before your house? If it was an environment that a spider would be happy in, then you're on their patch! No shade, we have exactly the same issue in our new build!

TartanBarmy · 23/08/2025 14:02

It’s the time of year - spider season is early.

Nourishinghandcream · 23/08/2025 14:02

As above, age has little or no effect.
Would have thought the environment is more likely.

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 23/08/2025 14:03

What kind are they? I notice many false widows live in little holes or something in my double glazed windows (under the sills), but they tend to stay there and not come in.

My house has many cellar spiders (spindly) and some big house ones, so maybe others are put off.

YesHonestly · 23/08/2025 14:04

As another poster said, what was there before the houses?

My housing estate was built on fields and even 10 years on we get a lot of bugs compared to my previous home, but I suppose it was their land first!

WonderingWanda · 23/08/2025 14:05

Probably because someone built on their home.

ChipsnGraveee · 23/08/2025 14:06

We had the exact opposite - bought a new build and didn’t see a single spider of any type for well over 5 years! I loved it. Ours was built on an old mill.

bumblebramble · 23/08/2025 14:09

I’ve found we have way more spiders since we got a eufy. They never got a chance to settle in comfortably when I was knocking round with a vacuum cleaner, poking it into corners, moving furniture, whacking curtains, etc.

Cinaferna · 23/08/2025 14:13

I don't think it's a new-build thing. Our house is old but DH is on constant spider watch. I don't mind the tiny bodied thread-legged ones, but those big back scuttlers scare the life out of me.

Bluevelvetsofa · 23/08/2025 15:11

Ours is a new build, built on former fields. Field mice, spiders, flies and tiny flies spend a lot of time trying to get into our house, except the field mice aim for the garage.

We spend an equal amount of time letting them know they aren’t welcome.

Tootsiroll · 23/08/2025 15:30

Funny, my current house is old but I've only see a handful of spiders. I use to be terrified of them but now I mostly leave the small ones and the ones that are all leg and no body to their own devices. I still have to hoover up the few big ones I've seen, I still have my limits!!!!

As someone else said Spider season is upon us early this year. Usually kicks off early Autumn but webs are appearing now. Lady spiders build a web, male spiders are out & about to find a mate, then they get eaten by her. I think you can get more if you have large trees/hedgerows/woods close by. My cat catches & eats all our spiders.

Laiste · 23/08/2025 16:04

I think we've more spiders than usual this year. We have an old house and the vines and roses growing up the front have got quite big, and we've had windows open pretty much all the time last couple of months so i was blaming that.

Mind you i got the car washed last week and the very next day i came out and there was a web from the wing mirror to the door handle with proud spider in the middle ! 🙄

I think they're onto something tbh.

Get a window net from Amazon. It sticks completely over the window using Velcro so you can still open and close it. I have an awful phobia of spiders, these nets are on my windows and doors and I very very rarely get any spiders inside the house.

PuppyMonkey · 23/08/2025 16:18

I’ve just been round spraying Staykill all over my house, spiders don’t like it. Indorex similar thing.

Same here (including being beside an old mill!). I've lived in 4 new builds, seldom see any spiders, despite my windows being wide open most of the year.

fruitpastille · 23/08/2025 18:39

We have had a ridiculous amount of cellar spiders (the spindly ones) in the last few months in our not new but not old house. It's the same at my work so I think it's nothing to do with the building. We've had a normal amount of other spiders.

NotABrokenClock · 23/08/2025 18:41

We were inold dlat, lots of greenery around andtrees, bunch of spiders in every room. We just live with them. Ours were predominantly smaller and daddy long legs. They were just everywhere but do no harm

Yes, I have seen a few scuttling across my living room floor recently.
