Diamond window covering

I'm at a loss what to do with these windows! 1930s house with lovely diamond stained glass windows in each bedroom. About 600mm square.

But we're used to sleeping in the dark!

Currently blocked up with cardboard but that's not a longterm solution!

Rough idea attached but we don't have a frame, window is in a deep recess with just plastered wall finish. Much like the round pic, but diamond.

You can get blackout blinds to be fitted in the window frame. it will have to be opened diagonally but can’t see why it couldn’t be done.
Something like this -

Years ago we had a round window, just had a pair of normal blackout curtains made to fit the total rectangle of space, which covered the whole area (ie a rectangle which covered the circle)
Sadly that was a previous house so no photos available.

A friend of mine had cushions made to fit the shape of a window like that, foam padding in a fabric cover. She’d stuck them inside the window recess at night and remove in the morning, they could then be used as floor cushions or just put aside.

DeanStockwelll · 20/08/2025 09:03

How about shutters ? You could mount them in the recess or on the wall.

Geneticsbunny · 20/08/2025 09:29

@PinkCamelias that is a genius idea.

Hollyrosehome · 20/08/2025 10:18

We started with a pillow @PinkCamelias ! Maybe something custom would work and be cost effective. Plus no framework on show in the day.

Will look into blinds - never thought to mount them on the diagonal but would have to be a slim frame so doesn't look awful open. It is a pretty window.

We got shutters for this port hole window.

Perhaps porthole bungs might work. https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/1248922521/porthole-bung-cover-cushion-narrowboat

We have shutters on the main windows so that may be a neat fix @Michele09 although wanted to see the window in the day as the stained glass is quite nice. That is so smart for the porthole and will get a quote to compare to - thank you.

@DiordreBarlow Never heard of these! How clever - a hybrid pillow/panel. Thank you for showing me this. Definitely a contender.

Our shutter was from Apollo blinds.

Perfect - local too!

I have a little sidelight in my sitting room and occasionally, when the sun is low, it reflects off a parked car straight through the window onto the TV. It's too nice a window to cover so I just shove a cushion in it as needed. I think that's a really good idea for your window.

I think they're a franchise so, although I can recommend them, our local one would probably be very far from you. We also had a shutter in a very long window on the stairs with a fan in the arch at the top - looks fab.

Wot23 · 20/08/2025 20:17

no way to avoid a shutter masking much of the window, a real shame as the stained glass is in outer rim only

I'd much prefer the narrowboat type "bungs" that you simply take in and out as required, although of course where to store them when out is their compromise.

luckycat888 · 24/08/2025 02:02

@HollyrosehomeWe have a custom pillow (firm piece of foam with custom cover and a handle stitched on). We take out every morning like you would open a curtain. Very effective in blocking out all light. We love it.

IAmNotASheep · 24/08/2025 02:13

Tapestry or similar with blackout fabric to rear hung from ceiling level which can be slid to one side
or artwork on similar theme

Or the old slide across shutter (although that might ruin the feel as it’s a very permanent fixture

I wouldn’t want to fit blinds within the recess as I think it will ruin the lovely window so I’d go for something seperate like above
