Rugs on carpets?

Does it just look weird? Can it work?

My preference would be for wooden flooring, but I live in a Victorian flat on the first floor and am worried about acoustics (for me and my neighbours!).

I'm a bit clumsy so think any new carpets would be messed up within no time without rugs down.

It looks OK if you have a plain carpet in a nondescript colour. People used to have large hearthrugs, or one that they would sit round when the family TV became the focal point. Or have one in front of patio doors or French windows where animals and muddy people might walk in.

I don't like them where people will walk and eventually trip over them.

I prefer a thick soft carpet, but polypropylene carpets are very easy to clean and can be treated harshly.

I think it's fine

I’d check your terms most flats won’t allow hard flooring at all (owning and renting).

Thanks everyone!

@boulevardofbrokendreamss I don't think there's a clause prohibiting wooden floors. The ground floor flat below me removed all carpets (much to the pain of the basement flat!). I'd say they are a noisy bunch.

The flat beside me on the same level has the original wooden flooring in the living room, they've put down lots of rugs though.

Wooden floors appeal as I'd be less precious about the space (e.g. accidently spilling some red wine on the floor).

I probably won't go for wool carpets due to a previous moth infestation. I'm considering seagrass, but the original wooden flooring would be my number one choice. The noise issue is on my mind... argh!

I have a rug, on a rug, on a carpet
But that is because I am paranoid about a spark from the open fireplace burring the carpet as replacement of that would be a lot more expensive than a rug (or 2)

I really don’t like rugs on carpets, but I have no idea why really.

I think it makes me assume the rug is hiding something, and therefore that the place might be dirty, but I realise that’s irrational. And as has been pointed out, people used to have hearth rugs.

I have a neutral carpet and a patterned rug. It adds texture, pattern and I like the layered cosiness.

I have a rug on a carpet doing exactly that 😂

It's a temporary solution as I'm saving up to re-do the kitchen & don't want to replace the carpet in the adjoining dining room as the new carpet is likely to get mucked up by the kitchen re-furb. My intention is to have wooden flooring put in both rooms.

We have a large, carpeted bedroom but because we don’t have wardrobes or drawers in there, the floor can seem like a big expanse of carpet. So a large rug under the bed and around creates a sort of zone, which breaks it up and adds dimension to the room.

Same here. The carpet just looked too plain and I like the look of the (muted) pattern of the rug. I used double-sided carpet tape to keep the rug in place.
