Will this small room work as a double photo included

I have viewed a house and love it but one of the bedrooms is very small. It would only be used by our 21 year old son who is in the army and so only around at weekends with minimal stuff. He would need a double size bed though.

Could it work? I have asked AI to do a design but got nowhere 😅

How about a queen size bed? So a small double?

MiddleAgedDread · 17/08/2025 08:07

That’s not that small! 8’2 is wider than a bed is longer so turn it round the other way from how they’ve got the bed with the headboard against the wall with no windows. Plenty of space!

PrincessofWells · 17/08/2025 08:08

As pp said, a small double is 4ft x 6ft 3in so that would give you 2ft at the end of the bed. Yes it would work.

AwkwardPaws27 · 17/08/2025 08:10

A standard UK double mattress is 4'6" x 6'3", so it would fit fine in either orientation but there wouldn't be much room to walk around the bed; I'd probably plan to have it against a wall as there's only one person using it, to maximise floor space for wardrobe/chest of drawers.
Look at lower profile bedframes too, rather than chunky upholstered types which will add bulk.

Yes, I too would turn the bed round. I wouldn't go with the small double idea. I have one and it's barely bigger than a single so would be small for an adult male. Turn the bed around and get one with drawers or an ottoman for additional storage. Should hopefully have room for a small wardrobe too.

AltitudeCheck · 17/08/2025 08:12

Yes, you could fit a double (4ft6 by 6ft3) and if you turned the bed 90 degrees and put it under the far window you'd have a little more floor space and could access the underbed storage more easily, you could also get a small desk / drawers under the second window. A small double (queen) is 4ft x 6ft 3 so gives a tiny bit more room

I have a similar sized room as a spare with a small double. Works well

Reallybadidea · 17/08/2025 08:15

I think the photo is making the roof look more narrow than it really is. Our smallest bedroom is that size and we use it as a guest double absolutely fine.

Under the window is probably the best location for it but the radiator is there - it's not super expensive to move them, so I'd look into doing that.

Gagamama2 · 17/08/2025 08:18

I would put a double bed in side on, so you aren’t losing lots of space down the side of it. Buy an ottoman bed or one with drawers underneath so it provides lots of storage.

Not sure where the door is but maybe it’s possible to put a wardrobe in the space left on the rhs.

If not then drawers where the current ones are. or a longer drawer unit where I have drawn the bedside table, going under the window - maybe more space there and the top of it can be used as a bedside table.

My son also has a big wall mounted wall cupboard from Ikea mounted on the wall above the foot of his bed for more storage. It’s from the Ivar range. The room will def fit the bed, it’s the storage that needs thinking about

Yes, our smallest room is 8x8 & works with a doubled bed, 2 bedside tables and narrow shelf unit/bookcase. It works fine when my (now adult) god daughter comes to stay.luve here for a bit. It would be a bit small with a double bed in it as a permanent room with all of someones stuff though, but they could make do or have a single bed

housethatbuiltme · 17/08/2025 08:42

I don' really understand how thats 'small'?

We have 2 large double bedrooms and they are 2.40 x 3.90 which is only 60cm longer (and to be fairs thats the alcove at the sides of the chimney breast otherwise it more like 3.50).

My sons room easily has a double in. Although we pushed one side against a wall so it can fit a chest of draws and small wardrobe too and that is only 2.70 x 2.30.

Everyone work man thats been to our house has commented on just how big the rooms are so 3.33 x 2.49 is definitely not small.

Travelcrazy · 17/08/2025 08:46

Thanks everyone that’s really helpful and reassuring, now I just have to convince DH that it is the right house for us!

Plenty of space for occasional use. Our guest room is slightly smaller than this and has a double bed, 2 bedside tables with drawers and a chest of drawers. Oh, and a chair for throwing clothes on 😅.

Glamba · 11/12/2025 09:27

10x8, yes completely fine. He can weigh up whether he wants a full double, or a small double to maximise floor & furniture space.

an Ottoman bed rotated to sit along the window wall might give him the most useable space & storage if you want to make the most of every cm.

Denim4ever · 11/12/2025 09:36

DS's room is similar size, he has a single but room for a desk, wardrobe, Ottoman with seating.

We have a double room that's more square than rectangular and that was more tricky to fit things in
