Living in a static caravan during renovations

Anyone done this? We can buy a caravan, put it on the driveway, and sell it back at 50% within 6 months. But what else do we need to know? Can we hook up to mains sewerage, plumbing and heating in the house? License from council?

I know it's going to be cold as we're heading into winter. And I already know my 2 teenagers are going to hate me for this ;-) but hopefully worth it in the end.

It doesn't have to be grim. Get a good one. My mate has a caravan, new, on a site, but it has a shower better than the one i have at home. It has centrsl heating too. Hopefully you could get something decent second hand. Is it a possibility to get an air bnb instead? I would imagine renovation is stressful. I would try to make it as comfortable as possible

I think it sounds a great idea, OP!

It’s great if you have private land to park the caravan. Best to check what are the rules with your council. I know that where I am, living in a parked caravan is not allowed

Everyone I know who has done this has looked forward immensely to Christmas in their new house. Of course it will all be done by Christmas!

Christmas the following year, in every case. It never takes the predicted 6m. Always much longer.

Top tip from them: keep a washing machine plumbed-in in the garage or similar accessible location and prioritise getting a bathroom finished in the house. Makes a lot of difference to your comfort, especially during term time.

They've all said it was worth it eventually.

It will be done by Christmas OP! Ha, ha. It has to be done in 6 months as we have to sell the caravan back by then. The house will have electricity and heating by then for sure - the rest of it, we'll have to see!
Thanks for all the advice everyone!

I lived in a tent with my parents and 2 sisters (one a baby) for 2 years. Lice grew fat on my head. The plan had been to move in by school start 1976; the house had electricity and running water (no central heating, bare concrete floors) by 1978, we did the grand inauguration of the indoor loos by christmas (78), moved in thanks to an ancient woodburner in feb 79. Something you'd call flooring was in 83. Between the ages of 8 and 19, holding a party was a distant hope.
Heed the advice of both pps: have a plan B for hygiene, and do not assume timing will work perfectly. Things can happen.

Gosh OP, that sounds particularly grim! I'm sorry it was so hard for you for so long.

A small point but OP refers to the original poster (so you, OP!), PP refers to previous poster.

I've never done this for a renovation, but an ex came from a big family and tehy had a caravan constantly on the driveway for spillover guests. I didn't like staying in it for longer than a few nights so I wouldn't be able to do 6m personally!

Oh, I'd always wondered what OP meant!

Yes, well, it's not as though I'm thinking "Oo, I can't wait to live in a static caravan for six months!" Quite the opposite. But you do what you have to do to move on, improve your life, and hopefully have a beautiful house at the end.
