Housing advice

So my flat that I live in now gets extremely hot over the summer months, sometimes our rooms reach 28-30 degrees Celsius and that’s with 3 fans constantly on the go. Since the hotter months I’ve noticed my toddler who is 22 months, is having trouble staying asleep, she is soaking in sweat all the time even with no clothes on a fans, her behaviour has got a lot worse she knows what no means and she just doesn’t listen, which I know a lot of people say that’s toddler behaviour but I’ve got 2 older children that weren’t this bad, can living in extreme heat like this really affect her behaviour like this? Because I think she is really struggling with the heat of this flat. We live in social housing and are on the list to move as we can’t afford private renting or to buy in our area but I just really don’t know what to do or how to speed up getting a move, I hate to think that the heat in this flat could be having such a negative affect on her behaviour and health. My question is has anybody been in a similar situation with your young child being negatively affected by living somewhere that’s too hot? And also if anyone is on the list for social housing, we currently are band C with medium medical and overcrowding and been bidding for 2 years and still aren’t close even with so many letters for our autistic child. Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Wet a towel, wring it out and put it on top of her when she goes to sleep to cool her down. I assume you have as many windows open as possible at night and are keeping the curtains shut in the day?

Heat can make everyone more irritable, so can not getting enough sleep. Unfortunately though you could be waiting years still for a new property, there isn’t enough of them to go round & I know where we are in band C you would frankly be looking at 7+ years depending on property size, 9+ if you were after a 3 bedroom for example.

If you can’t afford to buy or private rent you’re stuck really doing damage control, agree with PP wet towel, windows open but curtains closed, fan, air con unit, keep the air circulating is all you can do really. Also worth having a look at anyone doing home swap’s.

Portable air con unit is your best friend. They are a huge investment but hopefully you can manage it.

You could try cooling gel mats under the sheet.

Poor thing, its horrible when you can't rest because of the heat

These are not extreme temperatures, it’s just hot because we are going through a sunny, warm summer. A normal summer like the rest of Europe. Hot weather can make you irritable yes, but this sort of temperatures are not detrimental to the health. Ride it out like the rest of us, we are only likely to see another week or two of it and the cooler weather will return. Some useful suggestions in previous posts about keeping cool.
