Moving into a new house or flat - do you knock to introduce yourself?

We are moving into a new apartment. There’s one flat on each floor. We have communal stairs and a lift.

Do you go and knock to introduce yourself to upstairs and downstairs? All eight floors? DP thought about making a cake and taking it around but I think that’s a bit OTT.

No, I’d wait to bump into people naturally.
And people might have allergies etc, so I’d say no to cake.

In an apartment no I wouldn't bother at all. In all the houses I've lived in immediate neighbours have beaten us to it and popped round to say hello or said hello over the back fence. I think it would be quite weird to knock on all the doors and introduce yourselves in a block of flats.

When I left home, my across the street neighbours reminded me of the time that my five-year-old self confidently knocked on the door and announced "Hi, we just moved in across the street - can I play with your kids?". My nanny was watching (and my parents had said that the neighbours had girls that were about my age) and it was a different time.

That was the last time I actively introduced myself though :)

I would and did knock on immediate neighbours. But then I also answer the door if someone knocks which apparently makes me weird in Mumsnet Land.

Yes I would knock on flats on your floor. Not the rest of the block though.

Tootsiroll · 10/08/2025 08:15

I didn't but my neighbours on both sides did. Made me feel very welcome when I first moved in.

assuming this is a London apartment block:

  • flat on same floor = yes (probably the last time you will ever have contact with them)
  • flat directly above you = yes, so when you later go up to complain about their noise it might be easier
  • other flats above you = no
  • flats below you = no

If your neighbours use Mumsnet they will hide behind the sofa and refuse to answer the door

In a flat I might knock and apologise if there is extra noise as we get the flat sorted to the ones below and either side. Otherwise I'd just see what happens with the remainder.
