Help me choose grout colour!

I need your help please!

This is a picture of my soon to be bathroom. Floor tiles aren’t quite as terracotta colour as the picture, they’re more a solid rust/reddish colour and will have white grout lines to emphasise the hexagon shape. I’ve got the exact wall tiles and vanity unit although not the same layout - this is an AI mock up.

I know it’s a bit eclectic but that’s my style (like mid century styles). I’ll be having art and plants too.

I’m stuck on the wall grout colour though. Grey to emphasise the wall tiles or white to keep it soft and light?

What would you choose and why?

Thank you!

Contrary to mumsnet view to always have dark grouting! I would go for a grout colour similar to the tiles so you have lovely soft lines and the art work and furniture can shine! Depending where you got your tiles from, they would recommend a specific colour that sort of matches the tiles. Looks like it's a pale white/cream sort of tile, correct?

@MH0084 correct there is a matching grout, I was wondering if it would be too busy with dark grout!

I would match the tile colour on this occasion , I wouldn’t put grey with cream

TeaBiscuitsNaptime · 08/08/2025 16:18

I would go for something with a hint of soft yellow. Give it a pop of colour

WonderingWanda · 08/08/2025 16:30

Match it to the tiles other wise there will be too much going on. Looks lovely!

Lizzbear · 08/08/2025 16:31

I used a praline coloured grout with my bone coloured tiles. Looks great 😊

LibertyLily · 08/08/2025 16:32

I'm usually a fan of grey/dark grout, but in the case of your lovely bathroom @Werehalfwaythere I agree with virtually everyone else that it should match your wall tiles.

Werehalfwaythere · 08/08/2025 16:54

@Lizzbear that sounds interesting, do you have a picture? I’m not sure what colour praline is!

Thanks everyone, really helpful!

Praline grout colour
looks a bit lighter in real life.

Grout will get darker. So dont go for a light colour. You'll always look at it and know it's dirt :P

Contrary to everyone else, I quite like the contrasting tiles and grout of the 50s and 60s, so would go with a contrast. A bit like this

Ivory? I have similar colour tiles and the builder went with ivory - I wasn’t sure at first and thought it should be white but it’s really grown on me!

We recently renovated and our tiler recommended a resin grout. It cost a bit more, but doesn't grow mould and I think he said its stronger than the tile- so shouldn't crack!

He had an entire, little box of sample grout colours and made up samples using tile offcuts- so we could see the grout colour options against the tiles, look at in the room at different times of the day etc. Are you doing it yourself or have you asked your tiler what the colour options are?

That sounds like a great service. We have a plumber doing the bathroom, but we’ve bought everything and made all design choices. I’ll research resin grout!

@Seaside3 I'm a bit of a dinosaur and not on Instagram, could you screenshot and post a pic?

@Owmyelbow yes this was my original thinking. I’ve never particularly loved dark grout with light tiles but I’m also a realist and know that shower grout especially rarely stays fresh. A darker grout is much more practical, I’m just worried it may clash with the floor pattern…

I also vouch for epoxy grout. We used in our white kit-kat tiled wall! However, it requires someone who knows how to apply it as it dries really quickly.

I love that, but I feel it requires a lot of bravery.

Do you think it ages well? Is it the type of thing that looks good for a year or two and then starts to look a bit naff I wonder?

I dunno, I absolutely love it and think red would look cool in contrast to my pink vanity - but it’s a statement for sure!

Hmm, I'm usually all about playing safe with fixtures, however, what you have already chosen is bold, so why not fully lean in?
Personally, I dont think it is in fashion, so it can't go out. Its a design choice, referencing the 50s/60s, so not fashion lead. I think you could do it and may regret play8ng safe.

Icebreakhell · 09/08/2025 07:36

I dint like dark grout on pale tiles. It’ll tie in better with the floor if you match the grout. Just clean it regularly and it’ll be fine.
