Village - how rural vs renovation

What to do what to do-
live in nice village, I’m a bit bored. It has the school, preschool, nice cafe and playground etc. but nowhere nice to go for a walk with the dog. It’s just sewage works and roads, nothing beautiful or countryside feeling at all.
but there is a regular bus service, train station a 20 min walk and a secondary school ten mins drive away.
the problem is that our house needs work, it’s starting to fall apart and all the space is in the wrong places. The quotes from builders will cost more than the house can possibly be worth, about 100k more!!
and while the village works, we’re kind of overlooked and it just lacks something.

ive seen a beautiful house, but it’s ten mins by car from everything from small village school, to market town with trains, to supermarkets. 20 mins to a swimming pool and the dr and dentist etc.

kids are not in school yet but obvs will do soon.

do we move now, move later? Do the work, not do the work?

OH and I also have completely different ideals - I want to live in a field somewhere and he wants to live in a big city so it’s so hard to agree!

theres a bigger village nearby that would be good but nothing on the market yet… do we hold off, or move to my beautiful house that’s everything ive ever dreamed?!!

don’t know where to start!!

You have multiple dcs so I think you start with the things that will make all your lives better - that is schools and friends nearby, so that they are not isolated as children, and you can do primary school runs and they can get themselves to senior school. Being in the middle of a field is not great for them.

There's no rush to choose a house today. I'd set yourself a reasonable timescale, spend that time redecorating and doing essential maintenance, while looking for a home that suits you all better. Don't rush. It's an important decision. How old are your dcs? Moving during senior school is harder than during primary.

If you have kids, do not put them, or you, in the position where they have to be taken everywhere.
They do not stay small for long and will soon want to meet with friends, after school clubs, going shopping, cinema etc. If they can't even access the train/bus without a lift I think you are being unfair.

@Seeline i I know what you mean about driving kids around and if we were looking at rural or town then I might be more bothered. But we currently live in a village and are looking at other villages where yes there is more than this beautiful house location, but we’d still have to drive to some clubs, friend’s houses and things. The beautiful house is a ten minute drive from most things so not far.

however where we are now does have a really useful bus route which this place does not. But kids a preschool so we have quite a few years for things to change
