What’s this called and can I replace it/paint it?

This material squishy like trim on my door has various cuts/rips. I’d like to paint the front door a colour and am wondering how this bit will stand out, so thought of either painting it to match the new paint or replacing it. But-I can’t find an answer to what it’s called?

Is it draft prooofing?

BasiliskStare · 05/08/2025 21:43

I think it is door insulation , done in strips to stop draughts etc . It's not expensive so I would replace it . Don't paint it

ETA if you google something like front door draught / weather proofing I am sure you will find something similar.

If you paint it, it will be stiff and then won't work. You should remove it, paint the door and frame, then replace it.
It's called draught excluder. You can buy it on a roll from b&q

I’m not convinced it’s any of them? I cant see how to remove it from the door too?

Is it a fire door?

If yes, it is called an intumescent strip - a fireproof seal that expands with heat to prevent smoke and flames coming in (or out) of the room. So no, don't paint it or else it won't work.

2catsandhappy · 05/08/2025 22:15

Peel it off. It has a sticky backing to stick to the frame.
Don't paint it.

Knickknock · 05/08/2025 22:30

@15minutesaday it’s my front door.
@2catsandhappy I can’t poel it off, it’s stuck within the door frame I think? Like it’s a part of the actual door?

It’s squishy and hollow… I can’t be the only person with a front door like this?!

I've just realised you mean the white tube with the hole/tear in and not the dark fluffy things. It's just a watertight seal (that's failed because of the rip. You probably can paint it but, if it was me, I'd masking tape it off and paint the door. I might even try to repair the holes with some sort of electrical (plastic) tape.
