Overhead wardrobe - want to modernise

Hi everyone,

I’ve been living in this house for 8 years, and my bedroom has an overbed wardrobe that I find quite dated. I do appreciate the storage since it’s a small room but I’d love to modernise the look.

A few years ago, I painted the wood panel (which extends down from the bridging units) white, it was originally brown, and that was an improvement for a while. But now, I’m really disliking the remaining brown colour.

I’d love some advice:

  • Should I paint the whole unit?
  • If painting, would a green tone work, or should I go for white to brighten the space?
  • Should I consider attaching long mirrors to the wardrobes on either side of the bed?
  • OR should I consider getting rid of the whole unit?! 😱

For context, the wall opposite the bed is painted olive green.

I’m posting a photo of my room and a couple of inspiration images I’ve found online. I’m not sure if they’d work for my space, so I’d really appreciate your suggestions!

Thanks in advance!

I like the white cupboard with green wall. It makes it look like a boutique hotel

Both are lovely and certainly would work as I actually thought they were all the same room before reading your OP.

They both have a bit of a shelf/headboard built in which, while subtle, I think makes a big difference to it looking more stylish. Would.you be able to do similar?

Personally I like the neutral tones but both look great.

I would paint the whole lot green. Cupboard and wall. Or I would consider going crazy and getting a customised wrap with a bold print / pattern and wrapping the whole lot. However that is polarising. I like a bit of Laurence LB in my old age so I have no shame when it comes to crazy. Have a look at knobs and bobbles for the doors.

We've got this, we call it caravan chic! I was planning to rip it out but those pics you've posted actually look quite nice.

I would paint everything green - colour drenching would make the fugly wardrobes 'disappear', imo, and the green is lovely!

I agree with previous posters re: adding a shelf/headboard if possible.

Thanks so much for all the ideas!

I can definitely look into adding a proper headboard or shelf and removing those little triangular side shelves. Also the knobs for the doors can easily be done.

I have a few questions:

  • If I painted the entire room green, would it make the space feel smaller or darker? So you mean white ceiling and doors, but everything else green?
  • Do you think removing the bridging units would be worth sacrificing the storage for a bigger visual impact?
  • And what about mirrors on the side wardrobes, would that modernise the space or ruin the look?

I’m also attaching a couple more inspiration photos I’ve found which are probably closer to the suggestions you have given than my original photos?

Thanks again for all your suggestions, they’ve been really helpful!

I think keeping the overhead storage is really useful. I like the all over paint colour in your second group of pictures. Definitely the shelf behind the headboard.
