Pros and cons of wooden flooring.

We need new carpets our hall and kitchen has wooden flooring which I like except in the winter it’s cold underfoot as we didn’t put in underfloor heating.

We’re considering wooden or laminate in the lounge. Anyone got any pros and cons of it in their lounge?

I quite like the feel of a carpet but like the aesthetic of wood. I have to hoover and clean the other floors regularly so one more room wouldn’t be too much of a con.

Is it still cosy without a carpet? We’d probably put down a large rug.

I have wood laminate and I really like it. easy to clean and with some rugs around doesn’t feel so cold.
We will be replacing the floors soon and I’m torn between keeping the laminate or switching into LVT (we will install UFH).

We had our carpet taken up and parquet stripped. Two rugs in the room, open fire and radiators in winter and it’s cosy enough. Not as warm as when we had carpet but we love the look of the original 1970s floor.

Have laminate in living room and bedroom. Been down 20 plus years. There is just me and no pets so it is still pristine. Supposed to be good if u have allergies. Easy to keep clean. Slippy if u walk around in tights- be careful. I noticed more spiders though. Will have no doubt been in the carpet- just didn't realise.

Carpets just hold dirt and bacteria. I would rather not have any - but we did use on the stairs for safety. I don't find real wood cold at all in winter but then we do all wear slippers as a house rule.

I have laminate and find it takes more cleaning than I thought it would - needs vacuuming and then a lightly damp mop to remove foot prints.

My nose had a wood floor in the living room when I moved in and I love it. We don't have rugs because no-one else likes them and it's not cold at all. Downside is splinters! It's pine and we've had a lot of splinters (not nice when it's visiting small children). It's been stripped and revarnished once and really needs doing again - has done for 10 years - but it's such a horrible job that we're very good at putting it off. Apparently they have two strip backs in them before you take them too thin. If I had to replace it, I'd fight for wood again.

I still can’t decide! I love having it in the hall and kitchen I just worry about how cosy it’ll feel if we put wood in the lounge and possibly the dining room.

Wood can be really good.

I have some hard wearing it is practically bullet proof. Easy to clean. Doesn't hold dust and dirt.

Bad news is pets can scratch it, moving heavy furniture around on it can wreck it. It can squeak. More difficult to fit.

If you are worried about an expanse of wood not feeling cosy you can always put a rug down. Then the only issue becomes finding a way of stopping the rug moving around.

Oh and natural wood with features like knots disguises dirt patches.

It's actually quite hard on my floor to spot the difference between say a small coffee splat and a feature like a knot.

I wouldn't say that it's cosy OP. Practical and stylish yes- cosy no.

Laminate is cleaner, and leaves so odour whereas carpet does. We have a few rugs on ours and they do not move.

We have solid oak flooring in our lounge and it is beautiful, easy to clean but has to be dried. Not cheap.
It's not cold at all and feels lovely underfoot, we have 2 dogs and not a scratch on the floor and they are very high energy!
