Been going round in circles! I’ve attached the floorplan and a rough layout of what we’ve been thinking so far but I just can’t get it quite right, not sure why. Because there’s only one window I feel like the tall units in the corner might look too dark?

On our wish list is
Full height fridge and separate freezer (we’re a family of 5 and don’t have space for another fridge or freezer in the utility or garage). Would be open to American FF instead although I think they can look a bit clunky.
dishwasher
5 ring induction hob
drawers under hob
built in/pull out bin
some sort of pantry/larder type cupboard

In the attached layout it’s a corner larder (this is a Howdens plan) but I’ve also looked at Smile who do a right angle corner tall cupboard and not sure if that’s better but they seem to be the only retailer who do that and I’m not yet completely convinced by them (their USP is that you pay nothing until the kitchen is delivered but the designer has now said that if I want to lock in the price I need to pay a 10% deposit which was never mentioned previously).

I would also quite like to have some seating hence the peninsula although I’m willing to compromise on that if needed. Thanks for any ideas!

This is the smile plan for context which I think does look better although gives slightly less storage

I think the colour change makes the space look long and narrow like a galley kitchen on the 1st pic.
Can you try a plan with all green fronts to see if it gives more width visually?
I think an extractor over the hob is important especially open plan. If you had some kind of top cupboard to the right of the hob you could have lighting in it and brighten that corner. Maybe a nice light fixture over the peninsula too.

I would remove the dog leg. We had this decision and chose to instead have an open space rather than a breakfast bar thing. I much much prefer it. It's such a lovely space to dance around in and no awkward corners to hit when you're in a rush.

You have a dining space. Make that the heart, not some serving space where you stand like a barmaid.

The images from Howdens aren’t the best and the smile ones are far better. I will attach other options I have from both but if we go for a corner larder I think we’ll go with Howdens as they’re cheaper and our builder unsurprisingly prefers working with them

Would you consider additional units on the dining area wall, for more storage?

If we cut it from the current layout then we do lose a fair bit of storage. Also my thoughts were that the kids are still very young (all under 6) so would be good to have them eat up at the breakfast bar while I chat to them and get stuff done in the kitchen. I still have to help the baby with her eating so if we’re sat over at the dining table I’d be running back and forth a lot

To my eye the one continuous colour is better because it doesn’t cut the end wall with the hob in half. Appreciate it’s completely subjective!

how much space do you have between the sink and the corner? When you get something hot out the oven will you have to cross the whole kitchen dodging children and pets to put it down, or is there room there?

Where will the kettle go? Is there a socket opposite the fridge to the right of the sink?

Namechangedasouting987 · 29/07/2025 07:00

Looks lovely! I wouldnt go for a shelf above the hob, it will just get greasy. The cupboards are better.
Wall units on other side of sink? You cant have too much storage.
Also what about full height units on wall opposite sink? I assume one has fridge in? Add small cupboard above? The gap is just a dirt magnet.
Can't see where your appliances are but stand in it and pretend to unload the dishwasher, make a cuppa, grill something and make sure it all works ergonomically.

Namechangedasouting987 · 29/07/2025 07:01

And plan more electric sockets than you think you will ever need.

Put your floor dimensions into Chat GPT and add specific things you want to include, you will.get some great plans.

I don't think you do lose much storage, you could even add another floor to ceiling cupboard along that right hand wall if you wanted. You lose a bit of prep space though.

Dining table is just as easy as breakfast bar but you don't have children falling off the stools every 5 seconds.

I also think it breaks up the family dynamic because people start to eat main meals separately in different spaces. It creates a rushed feeling I think to food.

I’ve added images from the other side to show the tall corner units, one Howdens one Smile bit effectively the same. Fridge, freezer, corner pantry and then oven tower.

I think I agree about the colour @PinballWizened . My favourite is the green and I’m worried it will be a bit too much to have all the wall units though? But white feels a bit dull and safe.

Go for as many drawers/pull out options as possible
Yes they're a bit more expensive but 200x easier to clean and get to/see the back of!
I am so glad I've got all drawers - ideal for saucepans, dry good storage containers from IKEA all labeled and you then see you don't need as much space as you thought you did!

I have all sage green including wall units. Looks amazing. (I have a heritage green island tho). I'll try to post a photo.
