Can it be done?

I live in a semi detached with living rooms and bedrooms on either side of the party wall and its noisy.

Could it be converted to a detached house with a 0.5m gap is it possible?

Sounds a bit extreme OP. Could you not add a cavity wall on that side and fill it with sound insulation (e.g. acoustic mineral wool)? You'd lose less space and not have to knock half the house down and start again 😂

I suspect that what you are suggesting will not help with the noise. Best course of action is taking down current plaster boards and add acoustic insulation in the cavity wall. There are a couple of options, like fiber or acoustic membrane. Alternatively, you can also add wall panelling with acoustic insulation (look at companies like Panelli) which is a much cheaper option and DIY friendly. But also not as efficient.

I imagine paying out for planning permission party wall agreements and building work would be far more expensive than just selling and buying a detached house

It can't be done

When I had an end terrace in between two horrible and noisy neighbours I had thoughts like this. It can't be done.

You could put in sound proofing along the adjoining wall but that isn't cheap. I did it in my terrace and it was effective.

I've now got a detached and I hope to never share walls again. I don't understand why people are so noisy now. I lived for decades in terraced and never heard anyone.
