Help settle out difference of opinion on parquet floor

Can you help settle a difference of opinion on this parquet floor?

We recently moved into a new house and then found we had a few unexpected carpet moth housemates.

We’ve just taken up the carpets and found this. The floor is in reasonably good nick - I suspect it might be original 1970s based the age of some of the carpet.

It’s an ugly dark colour but I think it could be repaired and restored to something lovely.

DH says it reminds him of his parents house and he can’t get past the old fashioned vibes.

Please help settle the argument - do we restore or do something else (carpet or new hardwood floor).

Beautiful

TheRealGoose · 28/09/2025 12:12

Wow, when I opened this I thought gosh lucky them, what a find, and it’s come up beautiful. With some lovely rugs and your furniture in it will look fab

we have oak floorboards, which we restored, and have large cream woollen wedge wood rug on top, which is lovely and warm under foot, but enough of the original floorboards still visible that it’s very Impactful.

you need a rug I think as it softens it, it’s cushioning under foot too and. Adds some warmth,

Beautiful.

Has your husband changed his mind about it?😁

Gorgeous floor, what a find! Look great with furniture and rugs

BreadInCaptivity · 28/09/2025 14:08

Wow it looks amazing 🤩

Absentosaur · 28/09/2025 14:12

I like parquet flooring, much more than carpets, often. However in this instance I can see what your DH means - it must be the pattern. It reminds me of our old school hall.

FFS DO NOT GET RID!!! These original features are worth a fortune!! Do you have any idea how much a parquet floor would cost to install?

If you don't want the bother of sanding it down & staining it (which I wouldn't recommend as it could damage the floor), beeswax it & cover it with carpet or a floating floor over the top done by someone who will do it sympathetically. You will be thankful that you did when you come to sell.

She did. Always worth checking the date and seeing if there's an update.

Your floor looks beautiful.

we had a few unexpected carpet moth housemates.

There may be some still lurking in your house. I don’t know if carpet moths and clothes moths act differently. One of my neighbours had clothes moths and they are spreading along this street. A nearer neighbour had just carpeted throughout with wool carpet from John Lewis when the clothes moths started on her carpets.

Mention this to your DH if he’s not as pleased with the floor as you are. It must be terrible to lay a beautiful new carpet and then notice it start to get nibbled.

PinkCamelias · 28/09/2025 16:50

It’s beautiful! And teak - you’re so lucky!

JenaWren · 28/09/2025 17:49

Yes DH loves it now.

I think carpet and clothes moths are the same. Nasty things. I have had the house treated twice and there’s been no sign since I took up the wool carpets. Fingers crossed they are no more.

This is amazing. Restore , pair with lovey stylish mid century furniture and you have an amazing space!

Wobblyhousebuyer · Yesterday 13:20

@JenaWren Your floor looks absolutely beautiful! We have just found similar in our large lounge diner of our 60s house following the dreaded carpet moths and deciding to check under the carpet! Can I ask how much you paid for someone to restore it for you?

TheClocksFast · Yesterday 13:25

I also love it. Restore and then use rugs to ‘tone it down’ for your husband.

madroid · Yesterday 13:44

beautiful!

gingangirly · Yesterday 14:10

We have a tiny bit of parquet flooring and mentioned covering it with carpet to a carpet sales man. He say not to ever do that as it will suffer with damp and the parquet will lift.

obviously not an issue with yours if the carpets has been on top of it for 50 years, but just be aware!

istherereallytimeforallthat · Yesterday 14:55

Oh definitely keep it.

Agree with a pp who says it looks like a primary school hall floor though.

JaninaDuszejko · Yesterday 16:49

Looks fabulous. I am so jealous, would love to have parquet flooring.

Tortephant · Yesterday 18:13

If DH can’t live with it then carpet over carefully and leave for the next owner to appreciate.

DO NOT sand it, that is totally wrong and will weaken the boards and IS NOT restoration. The Restorative approach would be to clean it and only wax or oil if actually required. The colour is its beauty so if that’s not appealing to you please just cover it and forget about it.

Nousernameideaaga · Yesterday 18:14

Restore , but lighten a bit if you can

Nousernameideaaga · Yesterday 18:15

Have just read the advice above mine. ignore mine then

just restore
