Any decorators on here? Mist coat.

Just started the mist cost on newly plastered extension. Using Leyland Trade Contract Matt. Advice on the tub says 1 part water to 9 parts paint. Does that sound right? I’ve previously gone 50/50.

Any/all advice gratefully received! Thank you.

the manufacturer gives instructions for a reason, they know their product

Thank you @Wot23. I’m not sure this really needed explaining. I was more after advice/the testament of others who had used the same/similar product, rather than an explanation on reading the instructions. Have you used it as a mist coat? Did you use 9:1?

Thank you for taking the time to reply?

You would have been better getting a ready made product like Optiva if your not experienced with mixing.

A mist coat on new plaster would normally be something like 70:30 or 80:20 ratio (i.e. aobut 3 or 4 parts paint to 1 part water), but I've sometimes diluted it a bit more than this with very thick-bodied paint. It needs to absorb fully into the wall, so dilute it bit by bit until it seems right.

I imagine Leyland want to make sure you use as much paint as possible 😆

Thank you all. It’s not that we’re inexperienced. We have used mist coats in most rooms but surprised to see the ratio of 9:1. We’ve not used this paint before. No idea why my husband bought it!

Fingers crossed…

We’ve just done this. I found it quite unsettling as it felt as though it wasn’t being absorbed into the wall (ergo too thick) but it was also running down the wall (ergo too thin). That was with a ratio of 70:30 paint to water.

Our plasterer said to use Dulux Supermatt and water it to a ratio of 70:30. He also said to do two mist coats before painting. However, our very experienced decorator recommended 1.5 litres of water to 8 litres of paint - so more like 85:10.

I would follow the instructions and be careful not to apply it too thickly. You can always add a bit more water if you think it’s not absorbing.

Every paint is different. Dilution is also dependant on room temperature and hygometry. Always do a sample and allow it to fully dry before doing an entire surface.

you asked for any advice, so why get upset when the advice is follow the manufacturer's instructions?
we don't know how your wall will take the paint, so it is impossible to categorically state a dilution factor. Try it and be prepared to vary if needed.
