Patio ideas?

Just moved into a 103 year old Georgian house with a large ish garden. Whilst the lovely lawn is beautiful we can’t do very much with the slabbed areas as we plan to do an extension in five years or so. But there is a seating area in a nice shady corner that we could do but loathe to spend money getting trades in to do up as spending a bit now on kitchen etc. can someone say if these slabs b be remedied or rescued in anyway without digging it all up and slabbing anew?

I'd jet wash it and maybe track a small border of some sort to delineate grass and patio. Looks nice!

Red creeping thyme between the cracks would be gorgeous and smell fab. I use Urban Herbs they’re a great company.

without replacing them the only thing you can do is to clean them. Buy yourself a pressure washer and some bleach and DIY it if you want to save money in the long run as they will certainly need doing again before your 5 years are up.

Have you looked at outdoor waterproof rugs?
Obviously not a permanent solution, but if after jet washing & planting they still disappoint, you could put a rug down for outdoor drinks/BBQ’S when entertaining?

Thanks all! Our builder who’s currently working on the house has kindly offered to replace the slabs with new paving and jointing and edging for a very reduced price as he’s already working here so we will go with that. Thank you!

Sorry to be pedantic, but a 103 year old house would be Edwardian. 203 year old would be Georgian.

Those herbal solutions look great.

George V?

Isnt it George the fifth? 1910-1936?

DH loves the creeping thyme idea by the way so I’m going to research that a bit more …

Creeping thyme is lovely! I’m trying to persuade it to grow between paving stones in part of my garden (planted last year, approx 50% still alive)

Apologies in advance for building-nerd stuff. ”Georgian” when describing buildings refers to the reign of the first 4 Georges. Regency refers to the last George who was Prince Regent for a long time before becoming King. It usually describes the more flamboyant style during his era. Number 5 doesn’t get an architectural style named after him. Poor bloke. I don’t think we have given monarch names to architectural eras since Edwardian times.

pedantically 1910 - 1936 is indeed the lifespan of a King George, but that period is referred to as "inter war" in terms of describing the architecture of that time.

You are correct that preceding 1910 was Edwardian & Victorian, but the regal name ceased to be used for architectural genres from 1910 onwards. For example, no one would refer to a 1952 - 2022 house as Elizabethan !

A Georgian property would be defined by its style of architecture from the earlier period of 1714 -1830
