Removing 60 foot of fake grass - expensive?

Looking at a house that needs 60 foot of this stuff taken out - what will be underneath it? I can't do that work myself due to physical issues so how much should I budget for removal and prepping the ground for turf? Guesstimates welcome.

I had this.

underneath mine was a load of sand and a weed proof membrane.

no topsoil underneath just rubble and mess.

Wot23 · 14/07/2025 19:55

as above, if installed properly it will be on a bed of sand with a membrane under it

you could churn the sand into the soil and use that as a bed for turf, rather depends if your soil would do with having drainage improved or not. A typical astroturf would be on 25 - 50mm deep sand bed, but if conditions were bad it might be as much as 100mm, In the latter care that too much for turf and needs removing.

Depends what you define as "expensive" but anything involving skips and carting off rubbish will be into the hundreds of £ + labour to do it might take into into 4 figures
Laying turf direct on top of the sand may or may not hinder the turf. Depends how long the astroturf has been down and how thick the sand bed remains after such time period.

Thank you both. Wonder what the deleted poster said, I mean how worked up can you get about astro turf?!

Depends on the construction but it usually has Sharp Sand. My neighbours AG was laid on this Grano Dust material. You might be able to bag it up and offer it for free on market place to get rid of it but will almost certainly need to get rid of the sand/grano before you can put real turf on.

this is all sounding much more complicated than I'd hoped, its for a house I am thinking of making an offer on. TBH its put me off!

Could you contact a couple of local firms and enquire as to costs. Maybe ask the sellers (and hope they are honest) about what is underneath.

I suppose it depends how much you want the house and have compare it to other properties. It's fixable, even if it costs a chunk but compared to a house without a driveway or on a busy road it would still come out a winner as that's always going to be more expensive or impossible to change.

If it’s been done properly it will be aggregate (possibly rougher then finer aggregate) then sand.

It would be a lot of labour to remove but not complicated. Removing concrete or paving laid onto concrete would be a lot worse as would need to be jackhammered and then removed.

You’d then need to replace with topsoil and turf (if you want lawn). Bear in mind plastic grass is often used because real grass wouldn’t grow.

Offer on the basis that they have it removed and replaced with soil/turf.

now you say it, that seems obvious, but I can't imagine they'd be happy to do that.

TBH I would write off any buyer that wanted me to do significant work to change my house to their taste. What if I did the work and then buyer pulls out? What if buyer is not happy with the results? Lots of room for disputes IMO.

If something is broken and they want me to do work to fix it I could understand that, but this isn’t something that’s broken!

PuzzlingRecluse · 16/07/2025 17:26

I did this on my new home, it was a smaller area than yours, I need to measure but its about 4 x 3m, Astro off, remove weed membrane, add top soil & turf it cost £300, local garden/landscapers, took them 2 visits less than 4 hours total. Very worth it!

Could you ask if they mind getting a quote or you getting a quote for the work? You could then consider that in your offer?

RentalWoesNotFun · 16/07/2025 18:11

Is it Im good nic, couod you put it on gumtree and sell it, or give it away, buyer removes.

8misskitty8 · 17/07/2025 00:05

Put it on Facebook marketplace or similar. Offer it for free providing buyer removes themselves.
Or you might be able to sell it cheap, have a look at local listings.

see I am clearly always going to be poor as I would never have thought of this! I'd be skipping it!
