Clover lawn

Does anyone have a clover lawn? How is it? I have a dog and grass just isn't working. Not going to lie (please don't shoot me), I ALMOST laid artificial grass. We got up to putting the gravel down but I'm having a change of heart, plus it's just alot.
After some research apparently if I put top soil on top of the gravel I can then lay a clover lawn which I wasn't aware of until last night but looks ideal for us.
Any advice/experience would be good!

Thanks, maybe should've posted in the gardening group but wanted to avoid with mentioning the artificial grass lol!

I've started using clover seeds on the patchy bits of lawn and they have taken really well. I had done moss treatment and scarified first so there were a lot of bald spots but they have held up better than the grass in this dry weather. Good for bees too.

DH isnt best please cos I can't make my mind up lol, wish I'd known about a clover lawn before we started!

I do. It's lovely

We have a lot of clover in our lawn - it's just appeared over time. We also have a lot of moss, dandelions and daisies and not much grass 😁
The only thing I would say is that it does attract the bees (which is obviously good), but I wander around barefoot in the summer and have been stung several times. I'm assuming a dog is not as heavy, and may also be more observant.

I'm gradually overseeding areas with clover as the dogs urine burns the grass off. Make sure you get the right clover variety though, (the micro clover) as some red clovers can quite tall.
Mine hasn't taken so well so far, but I think I sowed too early in the year so trying again now.

Clover is excellent for soil as it turns atmospheric nitrogen into nitrates which fertilise the soil

I have a partial clover lawn on gravel out front. It's very nice but not cat/dog friendly. It's very easy to pull out of gravel if walking on it. I was thinking of doing this in .y courtyard out back to because the cats hate gravel and so do I but I have a full grown tree back there and it won't grow in shade.
Ill take a photo in a minute when I'm dressed.

Sorry I got distracted, I meant to post this earlier. I planted a small bit of clover in gravel over membrane. It's not very green because it's been super hot here but it's spread to this in 2 years so would cover the area quickly if you planted more say a foot apart. It's covered in lovely blue flowers right now which don't really show in this photo.
They can take light footfall only.

We have been renovating a derelict property which had a completely overgrown garden. 3yrs on, we were at the stage of lay grass or something! I'd read briefly about lawns but that was it- no in depth info to make a final decision. Our garden is fairly large and going around the house, has a mix of full sunshine, partial and then almost 100% shade.

In the end, we seeded with grass- simply because I couldn't find enough info about a clover lawn. A hopeful bump for you though.

Thanks everyone! We've hired a landscaper to come and fix it, the plan is to lay turf and I'll plant clover in any patches that appear. We wanted to do it all ourselves but it's much harder than expected!

It certainly is. I think it's well worth getting the professionals in. They will do a great job.

It's amazing! We scarified our lawn this spring and added loads of clover seeds. It's taken in about half of it so will do those bits again. It absolutely lovely. So much nicer than grass and in this heat is still green and lovely. We have a dog, who sometimes uses the lawn to toilet (he prefers going for a walk to do his business) and the clover holds up so much better than the grass! I'd highly reccomend, I love it!

I posted a thread on this last year! I have a dog as well with toxic pee and am sick of all the burn patches. I’ve been reseeding with a clover grass mix. The clover has started slow but eventually will take over. I really like it, it does seem to be more resilient to dog pee. I was also considering getting fake grass but a year in, my lawn is the only one that looks lush and green. I’m really pleased. I use micro clover.
