Would you have a Totter and Tumble rug in your main living room?

We have a 5 year old so not a toddler but very messy still, and our living room is straight onto the front door so try as I might to insist on shoes off it often doesn't happen. We've also had numerous coffee and wine spills from people. I am looking for an area rug I can keep clean and someone recommended Totter & Tumble, but looking at the website they seem to be more for toddlers / playrooms. Would one of their rugs look weird / off in my living room as the main living area rug, over hardwood flooring? It is really hard to tell from the website what they actually look like in reality - i.e. are they really just like carpet or are they clearly rubbery playmats?

If they are not carpet-y looking enough, can anyone recommend anything else please?

I am not sure if a Ruggable would be too large for my machine as we want a 2x3m rug approx.

Ruggable might be ok if you don’t go for a thick shaggy one - I have one of the flat patterned ones (about 2m by 1.3) and it fits easily in my machine with plenty of room to spare. I think it tells you on the website what size machine you need for each rug.

We have one in our living room and I don't think it looks out of place at all but we do have a young child

Have a look at their designs, they are not garish or give of playroom vibes in my opinion

I have two 185cm x 275cm Ruggable rugs, one is a flat weave, the other is tufted, the tufted one won't quite fit in my machine which is a 9kg washer but I do find it cleans up really easily so have never needed to wash the tufted one (it would fit in a machine at the launderette though if I needed to wash it)

We've got one, but I don't think it's actually that easy to clean? The benefit is that it's really comfy to sit on. Pretty sure that we don't use one side anymore because of tomato sauce stains though.

BarnacleBeasley · 09/07/2025 15:41

I know someone who has one and it looks great. It's not carpety in texture, but it's not noticeably rubbery either and doesn't stand out. However, she advised me not to get one because I wanted it in my dining room which is mostly used as a playroom but I would have had table legs on it and apparently it would get permanently dented and not spring back.

Snoodley · 09/07/2025 15:46

We have one and it looks great (much more tasteful then most of our living room which is filled with IKEA toy storage 😂). It's not completely strain proof though - I haven't managed to get the biro out, and you have to be careful not to tear it when you vacuum.

A big positive is that they're double sided so you can turn it over if one side gets too bad (just check that you like the colour and pattern on both sides).

If you wipe it straight away it should stain

ours hasn't stained at all

SomethingDifferentBloomed · 09/07/2025 15:53

We have one, it’s lovely but I think still fairly obviously a play mat to be honest. It’s very comfy to sit on and it isn’t rubbery in texture, but it’s quite thick and slightly bouncy.

BakeOffRewatch · 09/07/2025 15:57

they have a swatch service totterandtumble.co.uk/collections/swatch-service I love it because it is soft to sit on and play on the floor. It’s not stain proof or washable, so I’d go for ruggable. The surface is textured so it’s an actually a real pain to get food out of. I weaned my first one on it but not my second.

thundertoday · 09/07/2025 15:57

Ooh ok, mixed reviews then!

OP have a look at the designs and see what you think. I love ours and people always comment on it. Some people have been surprised it's made from memory foam. My DC eat on ours and we wipe up and they also do messy play, sand, painting etc on it and it all wipes off

Its comfy to sit on too

BarnacleBeasley · 09/07/2025 16:28

I'm just back to add that they are also comfy for doing yoga/pilates on. That was the other reason I wanted one.

I looked at Ruggable for a different room but a designer friend said she'd put them in a house once and had to get rid of them as they curled up at the edges after a while.

Good point! I do exercise on mine as well.

Not stain proof or washable doesn’t sound great. The spillages here are usually coffee, wiped up straight away, or crumbs etc, and then muddy feet - despite my best efforts!

Would totter & tumblr be suitable for that?

I actually haven't found it a pain to clean at all OP. The only thing I had trouble getting out was biro but otherwise food, drinks, paint, dirt come up easily when wiped so I'm not sure what issues people have had with this. Maybe it's harder to wipe if left for long periods but if you wipe the spillages daily I can't see an issue!

I also vacuum mine despite the instructions saying not to

TakeMe2Insanity · 09/07/2025 20:29

We have one t+t in our corridor as thats where we change nappies downstairs and wanted something soft (wood floor) and easy to clean. Most people just think its our decor as it matches. We also have one in the living room in the toy zone. Both have worn well over the past year, super easy to clean (dc is a puker) and are nice to look at.

I hoover mine on a low suction setting.

Wirdle · 09/07/2025 20:33

Ours has definitely stained with pens but I love it, would probably get another even when we are past the playroom days- so comfy for sitting on and holds up better than rugs with dogs

BakeOffRewatch · 09/07/2025 20:35

No I haven’t been leaving stuff for ages 😂. Things like sauces, soup, puree, mud, play dough go into the little crevices of the mat. It’s wipe clean. We don’t use it for that kind of stuff anymore. We have two for the kids so I’m a big fan. I think their biggest attraction is how comfortable they are. I didn’t find it good for yoga as it stretches and flexes too much to get good grip and stability, depends on your level of yoga though. If you have pets, it’s not good with claws at all.

I didn't mean to offend! @BakeOffRewatch I just haven't had any trouble wiping those things away. Maybe we have different mats or one of them is newer or older and more / less textured!

TakeMe2Insanity · 09/07/2025 22:40

Re pets our cat hasn’t bothered it with his claws. He enjoys sitting on it in the heat as cooler.

OtiMama · 09/07/2025 23:31

We love our T&T mats, we have two. We just shake the crumbs off it and wipe with a cloth. They don't look like a carpet rug but it's a tasteful design compared to some children's mats and lovely material for children to play on. I think they've been well worth the money from baby to toddler to young children, suits all ages.

CloverPyramid · 10/07/2025 15:53

We had a Totter and Tumble mat and thought it was great, but eventually it really started to smell. Both a rubbery smell and a kind of sweaty one. We’re a shoes off house but our lounge was a thoroughfare to the rest of the house so it got a lot of foot traffic. We do have pets as well. Our house is generally very clean but for some reason this mat picked up a smell.

We also noticed that it started to look dirty in the textured parts of the rubber. Anything that stained stuck in those areas too.

It definitely looked like a rubber playmat rather than carpet. A much nicer than normal one, but still clearly not a rug or anything fabric-y.
