Thoughts on kitchen extension layout -- doubting decision now that the work started!

Please see proposed plan below. The work on the extension started and already ordered the big window that will go at the end of the room to form window seat. French doors will lead to the patio area to the side. I am doubting my decision now as I know most extentions have big bifolds at the back! Is the below reasonable or shall rethink the door/window/layout before it's too late!

@notafraidofthebigbadwolf that looks great and more what I had in mind when I suggested putting the kitchen down the left. I think if ops kitchen allows I would still put dining at the light end. The continuous units flow much nicer than the original plan, imo.
@Alevelprep25 thanks, we love it, even though it's not to everyone's taste!

I like the window seat but I don’t like the peninsula. But very much personal taste and completely depends on the style of the house. If it’s a beautiful old house I’d have the window or some French doors (maybe 2 sets). If it’s 1970s etc I might go for some sliders.

I have bi folds and use them all the time just make sure you have one “door” one that you can easily access the garden. Also I have full length curtains which look lovely that I can pull over when the sun gets too much.

Re kitchen layout - how do you feel about having the window seat be one side of your dining table seating?

if so you could do something like this

Actually you could do this even if you want the window seat separate, would just need to shorten the kitchen area to allow more dining space iyswim

We had a similar space, although yours is a metre or so wider. We chose to put dining with decent lighting options in the dark end and the kitchen it the light end - to the left side as pp suggested. It makes me happy every day. My husband can’t stand flies coming in, so no bifolds for us. We have picture windows, small opening windows and a patio door. It’s all so easy and the seating is social. I agree with everyone though that south facing is an issue for you. In our last house we had south facing bifolds and it was too hot whether open or closed. You definitely need to incorporate shading.

Another beautiful kitchen!

That's a great idea! And yes I should have added that the peninsula won't be as big as in the architect drawings so it's easier walk to the French door. It will also form a bar area so could have a stool or two on the other side for additional seating. On the right hand side, I want to have a dresser rather than more kitchen units as I feel it will be nicer (and a piece of furniture that I can take with me if I ever move house!)

I love the long bench seat along the end! Thank you!

Yes a dresser would be lovely there.

Suggest you move the access to the under stairs store area round to the side (as I’ve drawn) rather than at the end, that way you can have a longer dresser without it blocking the store access.

If you do make the window seat into dining seating, bear in mind you’ll want some cushions along the window to make it comfy to lean against, and don’t make it too deep! You could make the bench with a lift up seat for extra storage.

Glad the peninsula will be smaller in RL

I thought of that too but I think option 1 works better as don't want the table to be so close to the door. Perhaps it could work if the table is in the middle of the room a bit like an island. But then that will be on the way.

Work progressing and we are deciding on where all the electrics go now! Do hoping to get some helpful advice by reviving this thread. Going with the bench seat. I want a small tv in there as I don't get much use of the one in the living room! Where would you put one?

Definitely ditch the peninsula. Youve got a huge lovely space and you're going to cut it in half and make it awkward. It's like sticking a bookshelf in the middle of the bathroom.

Hopingagaistodda · 17/10/2025 10:32

Complete the plan you have. Bi folds are difficult for fitters to get right, and notoriously bad to secure ie easy to break into. The extra light is a benefit but having such a big area of effectively moving wall you loose other useful space that your window seat idea will add.

Is the small TV just for you to watch while cooking or clearing up ? If so then tbh I recommend using a tablet instead - can move it around to where you are and can use headphones with it easily.

I have a similar extension (was here when we bought) we have 2 large windows facing the garden and sliding doors on to the patio. Wouldn’t change what we have

It will be a mix to be fair. Also to use for my daily exercises so I'd rather have something that I don't have to move too much while doing that!
