How do you collect different recyclables in your kitchen

Am getting kitchen redone. My current collection of recyclables in my scruffy and knackered 30 year old kitchen is just literally 5 free standing bins by our kitchen table. So not great but it works. Family with 2 teens and dog so quite busy/lot of recycling - little boxes won't cut it for us! Any inspiration appreciated!

I have one big basket under the sink for everything then carry that out and sort it into the separate collection boxes.

For soft plastics and food waste I have a bag and box in the cupboard under the sink. Everything else just gets put on the worktop closest to the back door and taken out straight to the appropriate wheelie bin as and when. It doesn't really pile up as I also have dogs so am in and out of the back garden often.

We're having our kitchen redone as well, to date our recycling has been in three different boxes under the sink and then all gets taken to different bins outside.

Our council is definitely sticking with the current system of 5 different kitchen sortings (general rubbish, food waste, glass, plastics/tin and paper). So we've decided to embrace it and have 4 pull out bins in the new island so that we don't have to do a million trips up and down stairs to put it out straight away.

Our council just has recyclable and non recyclable, no other options. So I just have a dual bin with bags for each, which go out into a shed when full waiting for collection day!

YourWinter · 07/07/2025 13:48

My recyclable waste all goes into the same wheelie bin so I have one kitchen bin for non-recyclables, another for recyclables, and then most compostable waste goes in an old ice-cream tub while I’m prepping food and then into my compost bins in the garden. If it’s not suitable for home composting it goes straight into the green (garden) waste bin as our council takes all cooked and uncooked food in that bin, even bones.

I'm envious of this! we have to put it into open boxes and a bag for collection. So it's awkward and not covered like a nice wheely bin would be. We only have a wheely bin for non recyclables.

Lots of you with recyclables all going into a wheely bin - sorry, should have said in the OP that unfortunately we have these open boxes for recyclables. I would like all recyclables to go into a wheely bin - my DB has this in the neighbouring county.

We had most of the recyclables going into a wheely bin then moved and it’s one of the few things I miss about previous area!

Currently we have soft plastics in a bag on back of door, food waste in a metal compost bin on worktop, cardboard and paper on a basket on top of the fridge and general waste and other recycling in a pull out bin unit in a drawer.

I am going to get some kind of cupboard outside for the various recycling containers.

BeamMeUpCountMeIn · 07/07/2025 14:25

I have a shelf above the sink, a large tub for green wheelie bin recyclables (cardboard, plastic bottles), and two smaller tubs for batteries, foil, electrical bits, lush pots, light bulbs etc.

I need to make space for food waste actually as we're finally having it collected this autumn.

Tollington · 07/07/2025 14:30

One fifty litre bin under the sink for recycling, when it’s full we empty it in to the recycling wheelie bin. Another fifty litre for general waste

UnimaginableWindBird · 07/07/2025 14:36

I have 3 of these stacked in the corner between my fridge and the door.

We have a 3 section bin from JL for general, cans/plastic and cardboard/ glass.

We do need to keep on top of emptying it though, I wish it was bigger!

We have a separate food waste caddy from the council.

Doggymummar · 07/07/2025 15:11

I used a laundry basket and take it outside when it's full

CortadoPlease · 07/07/2025 15:16

Our area collects glass, metal and some plastics in one big recycling box, and paper & card in another. We have a cupboard with each box on its own shelf (one above the other) so it’s out of sight. We compost uncooked food scraps.

BarnacleBeasley · 07/07/2025 15:16

We have a 3-section pull-out bin in a cupboard which we use for general waste, plastics/cans and paper. A food waste caddy attached to the inside of the cupboard-under-the-sink door. And we collect the glass in bags in the cupboard under the stairs, but the council doesn't collect ours, we have to take it to the recycling bank ourselves.

These are what I use, 2 large and one smaller. I got some labels to show what goes in where.
But luckily I have a door to my garage off my kitchen and the recycling boxes go in there along with the food waste caddy( with liners supplied by the council) and home compost caddy. We have coloured bags for recycling so depending on which week it is the boxes get emptied into those. The food caddy gets regularly emptied into the outside food bin which is collected weekly and I empty the compost one into my heap whenever needed.

We recently renovated and had a 3, container bin installed under the workbench. Similar to the photo. I wrongly thought this would fit all recycling and general waste, but it just doesn't. Its just DH and myself, but we both WFH and cook from scratch most meals.

The larger section I use for cardboard/paper, 1 section for tins and the other for soft plastics. Like the pic, ours had a plastic cover. We then have a gap of 25cm between this and underneath of the worktop. I planned to store bin bags, cling film rolls etc here, but the shelf is so flimsy. If anything within the bin is slightly sticking out the top, as you close the bin, it dislodges the flimsy plastic cover and its a PITA. Bins are are great, but it just makes the shelf above useless.

I also have a general waste bin at the end of the island and a food caddy on the top. Our council are shite, and don't collect glass from the house at all. I have to take it to a bottle bank (or throw in general waste!) I therefore also have a bin in the utility for glass!
