Neighbour noise.

I'm just wondering if any of you hear your neighbours? We moved 2 years ago and hear very loud bangs from Next door. We will hear it up until midnight and sometimes it starts again at 5 am. My previous neighbours I hardly every heard so this is new to me.

What kind/age of house do you have? When we lived in a well converted victorian flat, we couldn't. In a 60s semi, we could. In a detached, we can't.

Previously in a semi 10 year old house, now we're in a 1950's semi.

We have a 1950s semi and can hear some noise. When we re-do the kitchen I'm planning some work to the wall to reduce noise, but mainly to reduce it for our neighbour from us!

Have you spoken with your neighbour about the late and early noise? Just wondering if it's something they're doing without though to you, or something they have little control over.

Pixiedust1234 · 05/07/2025 09:33

We have our hallways next to each other so there's a bit of extra distance (why don't builders do this more often??) and only a couple of rooms join. They are lovely and quiet but I can hear them singing (in a choir so practising), playing their piano (love it) and their bloody grandfather clock going DONG! every hour. I'm going to miss them when I move, the clock not so much 😂

Edit -
If I was in your shoes I would start the conversation and ask them what is causing the noise first, then you can get into a discussion of whether they can move it to another area (treadmill), or soundproof it (by putting wardrobe or bookcase on adjoining wall), or change timings (washing machine spinning badly). I bet it's a washing machine "walking" as mine does this when unbalanced.

We've spoke to them about it a couple of times, they go quiet for a day or two then start again. The only way I can describe the bangs is like being outside in a thunderstorm. We even feel the vibration from them. I can even hear them on the other side of the house.

I can hear my neighbours if they're are arguing (which is a lot!) and can hear their front door slam but luckily that's all really. We are 1960s end terrace

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 05/07/2025 09:38

1815 terrace and the walls are two feet thick. I have to look outside to see if their cars are there before I know whether my neighbours are even in - and I am very grateful of that. I can hear the dogs one side bark (but then they can hear mine...) and the little girl the other side splash in the bath (because the downstairs back part is a more recent addition and the walls are thinner). Other than that, nothing and it's bliss.

We had sound proofing fitted to the adjoining walls. Cost £5000 to have a false wall put in downstairs and upstairs. We used to be able to hear them changing channels on their TV, now it's only the piano we hear. It was life changing.

I edited my post while you were typing. That sounds like an unbalanced washing machine. It can be fixed by checking all the feet are touching the floor or with new brushes and can be a DIY fix.

PragmaticIsh · 05/07/2025 09:41

Did they say what the noise is when you spoke with them?

They just said sorry and blamed the dog 🤷‍♀️.

It's definitely not their washing machine as that's on the opposite side of the house. These are more like door slamming bangs or doors being full belted kind of shut.

I've been here 20+ years and never heard my neighbours - 1930s town house. But the man who lives there now I can hear every damn thing and I don't know why it's changed. His dog howling, caged birds shrieking, the kid squealing, every conversation he has about his jealous ex who still loves him, and even every time he gets a bloody text!

It’s so infuriating. I lived next door to the same people for 24 years, never a problem then suddenly (around covid) they just became ridiculously noisy. So bad at night too. Ended up moving.

Could it be something to do with their heating system? How will you ever know if the idiots won’t explain though??

Tumbleweed101 · 05/07/2025 09:59

1930’s semi - can hear voices at times and their TV but muffled. They leave their dog out a fair bit so that barks at times. Can hear alarms and Alexa now and then.

On the whole it has improved since they split as there was arguing fairly often at one point. Most of the year they are early to bed and early up due to their work.

I wouldn’t dare moan though as I have the busier household so they probably hear just as much from our side.
