Can you help me design my tiny shower room?

Hey

5ft 9inch by 5ft 8inch windowless shower room needs updated. I’m looking for some help to free up some floor space.

The sink is rectangular with 3 bulky drawers and takes up too much space. The shower is a curved corner with two doors that close, it’s a waterfall shower. There’s a heated radiator next to the shower, then the toilet is a big bulky square across from the sink. I’ve attached a poor diagram of the current layout!

We would love a bath. Could a P shaped bath work? Thinking a corner sink could help free up floor space, or should I add the sink to a sink/toilet duo cabinet?

I’d agree on the basin/toilet combo and what about a Japanese sitting bath?

MrsEMR · 03/07/2025 22:48

Where is the entry door?

Bluehydra · 03/07/2025 22:48

Oh sorry, entrance is between sink and toilet! Googling Japanese sitting bath now!

So we’d still need the shower as that’s what we prefer, so it would be a bath with a shower overhead with a hinged door (to close to increase space) I’d be looking to add.

The basin/toilet combos are hard to wash hands in, because you can’t stand as near the sink as you ordinarily would. We have a 3ft x 6ft shower room and it works great! We used a short projection wall mounted loo, a smallish oval sink (so no sharp corners), also wall mounted and with no drawers. That way the floor looks clear which helps. And personally I’d rather a large shower than a bath, but yes I think a p shaped bath or indeed a normal bath would fit fine. The thing is to get one with straight-ish sides and a flat base, so there’s plenty of standing room.

Ownedbykitties · 03/07/2025 22:57

would you consider a shower screen rather than a hinged door? Is there a reason you are keeping hold of the bath?

Bluehydra · 03/07/2025 22:58

Thanks @WashableVelvet so useful! Yes, the drawers definitely make it look smaller. Think wall mounting is the way to go.

@Ownedbykitties the bath is needed for kids. Yes as long as the screen could be moved, just don’t like the fixed ones as feel it would get in the way when bathing kids?

I have a corner toilet and a small hand basin, which is only suitable to wash your hands and clean your teeth, you couldn’t wash your face comfortably, you could have the P bath a corner loo and sink

go to Victoria plumbing website and can do a bathroom designer (free). You need to put in your dimensions and door, then you can select fittings, etc that will fit in to your space. You don’t have to buy from them, but you’ll know what fits. I found it useful for the layout of my en-suite.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 04/07/2025 06:48

My shower room is approx 6' by 6'. (It used to be a bathroom but I swapped the bath for a quadrant shower).

As PP says, getting smaller fittings is crucial. Evey inch counts so look at the dimensions. Eg, my basin + vanity unit is meant for a cloakroom (yet is still big enough, can comfortably wash hands in it). My loo has a short projection.

bloodredfeaturewall · 04/07/2025 07:03

that's not tiny Smile

many supplier/dyi stores have planners online.
moving any plumbing will drive up costs.

you can get high shower trays that could double up as bath for small ones.

housethatbuiltme · 04/07/2025 07:26

Your bathroom is bigger than the one we are building, and yes you could fit a bath in that space in general but layout depends on door placement and you would need likely need either a 'cloakroom sink' or 'sink/toilet combo system if you want to squeeze in a P shaped bath.

something like below is an example:

A 1700 x 700 double ended bath
500 vanity unit and basin
standard toilet

(obviously you could change colours/tiles I just used the standard popular colours right now)

A hinged glass shower screen which could be push back across the bath when not in use would help.
Play with the toilet position too - one of my toilets sits in a corner, projecting diagonally into the room, the actual corner is blocked off behind the toilet and the area above has corner shelves in.

Bluehydra · 04/07/2025 11:23

Thanks for so many suggestions! I added the dimensions to the Victorian plumbing designer and thought this layout looked good? Would change colours etc but think the layout has more floor space.

With the plumbing, could you switch the toilet to the corner behind the door (corner toilet perhaps?) and the sink on the right? That way you open the door to see a sink, which is much nicer than seeing the toilet.

PragmaticIsh · 04/07/2025 11:56

Also you wouldn't then walk into the room brushing against the toilet, which would feel dirty.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 04/07/2025 13:16

Does the door open outwards?

I'm not keen on the corner sink (esp if it's tiny). A small one with vanity unit/drawers facing the loo would be better.

Bluehydra · 04/07/2025 14:11

Yeah the door opens into the hall. I’ll have a look at corner toilets thanks! I was thinking of a corner sink unit, so it would have like a cupboard underneath for storage.

Our en-suite is about 5 x 5 ft and we fitted in a decent walk in shower (so much better than a cubicle), toilet and a narrow space saving sink. It has recessed shelves which I would recommend, they store plenty and are very neat. The toilet cistern and plumbing etc is boxed in around them. We had it done by a local bathroom supplier, and they some good ideas about what would and wouldn’t work.

Bluehydra · 05/07/2025 09:25

@TheMagicDeckchair thanks, like the shelving idea!
