Best storage units/shelves for a narrow, deep cupboard? Bit stuck...

We have a cupboard off the sitting room which is very tall (3.2m) but narrow and deep - it's 80cm wide and 1.9m deep, minus around 70cm clearance for the door.
Cannot afford to have anything custom made, so am thinking of IKEA, but not sure what to choose, find the choice of IKEA units bit daunting.
Any advice anyone, know there are some fab space planners out there

Hello Shitemum, glad to see you saw the thread!
Sorry, things to go in it include:
paint tins plus sample pots
tool box, drill
gardening bits
some cleaning materials
light bulbs
extension leads
sports kit
out of season coats if poss
sports kit
plus any other junk I cant find a home for!

Have looked at Antonius but you cant order all of it on line and cant face a trip to IKEA at the mo, DS2 is far too impatient!

Hi! Yes,I think we were on another space planning thread werent we?

Right I would do a deep shelf at the bottom and hang the coats under it on a rail fixed to the shelf so they are nearly touching the floor or leave space below coat hems for big plastic boxes on wheels that you can pull in and out.

So, above the coats you have a deep shelf, well about 60 cm deep. Then I would do a few less deep shelves say, 40cm deep above that and then at top, above head height, go back to deeper ones or stick with same depth all the way up and get one of those lightweight ladders for bookshelves from IKEA.

you could also hang a small pulley like for drying clothes above your head as you come into the cupboard for hanging more coats from on hangers.

If IKEA dont do something you can adapt use MDF and battons screwed to the walls on either side to put the shelves on.

also put some of those things that hold mops and brushes on the wall and a vacuum support thingy from IKEA.

Ikea delivery....well they do to me....

Thanks Shitemum, that sounds like a good plan, and yes we were on a bedroom design thread I think!
Thanks too KatyMac, yes IKEA do deliver to Norwich but not the ranges I want, at least not all the range so makes it hard to get all the bits you need, v frustrating!
Am thinking getting someone to put up MDF shelves and rails will prob be easier than the IKEA route.

Stupid Ikea

V annoying!
Seems silly to offer on line delivery if only half the range is available!

Me again. Obviously having thought about it a bit more the logical thing is to hang the coats up near the ceiling as they are not ones you are using.
Then you can have the bottom shelf less deep if you want too...
Put a bit of support under the back of each shelf too as well as the sides to help bear the weight.
MDF can be painted easily and bends much less than chipboard.
As the cupboard is deep you could try having a narrow shelf, say 20-25cm, up each side too to take cans of paint and smaller items. It'll look best if the side shelves are continuous with the back ones or they could even be cut from the same pieces in a sort of 'C' shape.
Try to leave the middle space about as wide as the door minimum.

We are about to move house in the next 2 or 4 months and have a few built-in cupboards and wardrobes to organise but space is tight.
This morning it occured to me I may have to keep my knickers in one of those IKEA plastic bag holders/dispensers screwed to the inside of the wardrobe door!

Thanks for that SM, sounds sensible, also means we could make use of the height of the room.
Am thinking of having mdf shelves round two of the walls at the same height but different depths, as you suggest, just need to make sure it won't cost too much. (Will leave the wall with the window and where the door opens onto free of shelves.)

We moved a month ago and am struggling to get my head round storage as there is no built in storage here, in our last house we had a big utility room with a whole wall of fitted cupboards for all our stuff which also housed the washing machine/drier, was bliss!

Re your knickers (!), have you looked at the IKEA Antonius range (if you can get to IKEA that is)? They have good wire baskets, some of which are sold as units with or without castors, which you could use either freestanding or inside a cupboard for underwear and other clothing bits?

Nearest IKEA is a 1.5 hour drive away and have no car. Did manage to go down last week with a friend and buy the kitchen for the new house tho! It'll be delivered later.

Main problem is with our built-in wardrobe as due to a brainwave of mine it has a section in the middle which is only 25cm deep - I got the builders to 'steal' that space and make a bult-in wall cupboard in the bathroom through the wall.

So, the wardrobe will have 3 doors but this kind of wasted space in the middle which I will probably put shelves in and try to keep folded clothes on. The left and right hand sides are just to narrow to fit any drawers or baskets in, the door frames would prevent them from puling out anyway.
Will just have two hanging rails on each side and a couple of shelves for jumpers etc. Shoes inside on floor. Bedroom is really too small for any other free-standing furniture...maybe some under-bed storage at most...

The frames and doors are not on yet so hopefully it'll be more promising once it's finished. Rest of house has ok storage.

You need Store:

Did look at the Elfa range at "Store" thanks PuppyMonkey, as per your link, and its fab but probably too £££.
Will speak to local handyman and try and come up with a cheaper solution I think.
SM, shelves sound a good option for such a small space. YOU could put belts and scarves (plus underwear) etc on them perhaps?
