Cost of structural engineer

Hoping we can get some views. We’ve now got planning permission to do a front extension and internal rejig on our Edwardian semi. The builder heas quoted about £50k (just to demonstrate size of project).

We now need a structural engineer to do the drawings and calculations for building control and so far we have been quoted £5k for this.

I would be grateful if anyone can share how much they paid for this service? We’re in the South.

Many thanks!

I’m about to start a significant renovation to my house involving demolition of one wing being replaced by a larger structure and a sizeable single storey addition to the rear. No internal reconfiguration but the single storey will be engineered to have no pillars. Quoted £4750+ vat for this. Home Counties location so that sounds about right. Previously I’ve been charged £500+ vat for steel calcs to replace load bearing walls as one-offs during projects. Note that site visits etc are usually a chargeable extra so make sure you have a full breakdown of the fee quote.

Structural engineers are either completely booked up or suspiciously available IME. Some builders have their own preferred engineers that they use because they work better with them but that doesn’t necessarily mean they are the right person for the job. SE’s are definitely not all equal in qualifications so Ensure that the one you choose has adequate liability on their insurance and is properly qualified - especially as you are attached to another property. Spending money on a decent SE is really important IMO.

We've just paid 4.5k for SE input for a single storey extension in Glasgow.
