Box Room and older children

At the moment we are in a small 1970s terrace. Downstairs consists of a living room/dining room and kitchen. Upstairs we have 2 double bedrooms (although 1 is on the small size) and a box room with bulkhead. My Ds is in there with a cot bed and I know a single bed would fit with a set of chest of drawers.

My main concern is that as he gets older it may become too small and we dont really have any other space for him to use to socialise or for toys etc.

Im wondering how others have coped as children get older?

Did you move or renovate loft space I've had a look at neighbours loft conversion and I've been unimpressed given the cost.

Or did your children happily grow up in the tiny cosy bedroom?

Upstairs we have two bedrooms, bathroom and an office/laundry room.

Downstairs living room (used to be dining room), master bedroom (used to be living room) and kitchen. Downstairs WC will soon be converted into a wet room...

You find a way to make it work without moving house.
We have four DC. Youngest two share, two teenagers have a room each.

My son age 10 has a tiny box room- 6x6 foot. I spent years feeling guilt and wanting to move but knowing if I did move I’d only be getting a house with a third bedroom an extra few feet bigger.
weve made it nice, we built a kallax bed under his window he then has a desk with gaming chair and a kallax unit going upright with wooden boxes and draws for his clothes.
he plays out a lot so doesn’t really spend that much time in there but when he does have mates round they sit in there quite happily. Think they see it as a den. If mates sleep over I get the air beds and they sleep downstairs. unfortunately as it is a new build we can’t do a loft extension. I have thought about knocking into the second bedroom and taking an extra foot but that bedroom is also kinda small so I’m not sure. If I had a bigger garden I would have made a summer house as an extra chill out space. I always thought I would move by the time he hits highschool so he can have a bigger bedroom but now mortgage rates are so high we can’t but he doesn’t seem bothered so it’s all good at the moment.

We are in this situation at the moment with 15yr old DS. Eventually we hope to convert the loft but it’s ££££ so can’t do it yet.

We got a carpenter in and he’s built a bed over the bulkhead, mid sleeper height. Included in the frame is a large 4-drawer chest of drawers and a large touch-open cupboard. The storage under it and in the drawers is VAST!

We then put a 4x4 Kallax at the end of the room for a TV/games console/nicknacks etc.

Best bit of building work in the house, it looks ace and it’s totally transformed his room.

Sorry to hijack the thread but would it be possible to post a picture? This is exactly what my husband thought we could do in my son's room but I wasn't sure how suitable it might be as he gets bigger 😄

My son had a room like that, although we moved when he was around 14. We had the bed built over the bulkhead, so there was a cupboard under. There was just room for a small wardrobe, and there were 2 long shelves along the wall above his bed.

Don’t worry. My youngest daughter had a small similar room and was ok. They just get used to it. If she had a bigger room she would have filled that too! We all adjust to what space we have. Far better having a small room than having to share

Yeah all the houses in our budget the third bedroom arent huge and not always a double. But honestly the only reason we would be moving is for a bigger 3rd bedroom.

And the hassle of moving increasing mortgage etc just doesn't seem worth it unless the house ticked the majority of my wish list (Utility room, 2nd bathroom etc etc).

That's true I think having their own space no matter how small is a bonus.
