SW facing extension -- skylight/lantern

We are planning a 5 by 3 m extension with flat roof. It's South facing and would like a big window overlooking the garden (3m) and a French door to the side. It should get enough light as facing SW. I would also love a skylight or lantern. Should I keep this to a minimum given the size if the window? I don't want it to end up being too hot and unusable during the summer months.

I would get air con installed in that room while you're at it.

We have the same and it's extremely hot in the Summer.

It's a consequence of bifold doors across the entire width of the kitchen diner plus the roof lantern.

How big is the roof lantern? I want it to be light and airy but it seems like the heat could be an issue

Ours is sW facing in a garden that’s quite shaded by buildings, it’s beautifully light but can get hot on a summers day and we end up with the sliding doors open. It’s not unbearable but we are I. The north.

If you look back through the threads on this board you'll find quite a bit of bifold door regret OP.

We’ve got aircon, I bloody love it !!

Alevelprep25 · 27/06/2025 14:24

Oh, I am not going for bifolds anyway. Just asking about the skylight

Consider a solid, well insulated roof (to control excessive heat in summer and freezing cold temperatures in winter) with two Velux windows. Install a radiator to extend its use in cold months.

That's what I am thinking. As the living room also faces SW and gets plenty of light throughout the sliding patio lights. There is also a possibility of adding a room on top of the extension in the future so perhaps best to keep things simple.

We have a large flat roof light and a 5m expanse of glass (half a door and half a picture window) and are south facing but dont find it gets that hot as we got triple glazing on everything. Bigger expanse but so worth it. It obviously warms up a bit but as soon as I open the door once the sun is off it then it cools down instantly
