What would you do with this window area? (Photo)

We’re in the process of redecorating our living room. This window is such a lovely place to sit but I don’t want to stick a sofa in front of the window. I’d love a built in window seat but no idea if it would work as there’s no recess.

We previously had our TV in the corner blocking the smaller window to the left, I don’t want to do that again so thinking of putting the TV on the wall above the socket but there’s only a space of 1m15cm before you hit the fireplace. I don’t want the TV above the fireplace as it’ll be too high. We’re going to get a corner sofa to go along the wall where I’m talking the picture from.

By the way to the right it’s a door into the garden so the seating can’t go all the way up to that wall.

Also advice on blinds vs curtains would be very welcome!

TLDR What would you do with this area?

Corner seat?

Geneticsbunny · 20/06/2025 20:57

Have you thought of building in a book case either side of the window (and maybe over it?) and then building a built in window seat at windowsill height between the bookcases?

Gingercar · 20/06/2025 20:59

It’s hard to say without seeing the rest of the room or the layout.

Doggielovecharlotte · 20/06/2025 21:00

Oooo I’d have window seat with two vistas!

DayOfSummer · 22/06/2025 08:03

Thanks for the replies. I’m not sure about building a bookcase around the window. But I like the idea of a corner seat. The rest of the room is currently piled high with our furniture so a photo wouldn’t give a good idea so I’ve drawn a basic floor plan

…just in case that didn’t work

I can’t see how much depth you have on the right (by the door) but AI suggested this, which is lovely! Image will take a little while to be reviewed.

Carpenter DH has made me one just like this, and the top is hinged in two parts to allow for storage underneath. Sourcing covers for a dense foam cushion so we can comfortably sit on it has been difficult and pricey though.

MrsMoastyToasty · 22/06/2025 08:32

It's a pity that the large window isn't patio doors and the doorway isn't a window.

I like what @NamechangeGPreception has suggested though. You could add a small accent chair too.

DayOfSummer · 22/06/2025 08:38

@NamechangeGPreception that’s amazing! How did you do that? What AI programme did you use and what prompts did you ask? I do love the look of that but sadly the depth to the right by the door is only 17cm. So I’m not sure the seats can go all the way up to the door. I like the idea of storage underneath.

DayOfSummer · 22/06/2025 08:43

However that AI image was done I’d love to see how it would look going round the corner to the left by the small window and turning into a tv cabinet and then to the right not going all the way along the window to the door. I don’t know if that would look rubbish though.

Would this work? Blue is sofas (so no corner sofa), red is tv and green is coffee table.

@Foolsgold74 it’s probably my drawing not being overly clear but I’m not sure that would work with the sofa in front of the fireplace. DH has managed to get the following picture which is close to what I had in mind but not quite as I don’t think the seat can go all the way along the window, would it look silly though if the seat only went partway across the window?

Ooooo and all that potential storage - I’d make it wider so I could lay down

DayOfSummer · 22/06/2025 09:30

If this helps this is what we had in mind for furniture placement:
blue=seating/sofa
green=tv
red=piano
yellow =kallax shelving

Forgot about the fireplace!
Wrt the tv, you can get pull down wall brackets. So it's on the wall when not in use and then at eye level when being watched.

dairydebris · 22/06/2025 09:36

I wouldn't have a windows bench as AI suggested, its not actually comfortable as nowhere to lean whilst looking out.
I'd do 2 comfy accent chairs facing towards each other and angled slightly looking out towards the window, with a small pretty carved table between them for coffee, book, laptop etc. Then there'd always be a correctly angled chair for enjoying sun and views ☺️

NamechangeGPreception · 22/06/2025 09:37

Also lovely! It is a beautiful window! ChatGPT.

Me too, with a little book shelf to make a reading nook.

Yes.... Window benches would mean most of the time you're looking into the room, not out!

DayOfSummer · 22/06/2025 09:50

I really appreciate all your replies, they’re giving me lots of food for thought and I’m also wondering whether free standing furniture rather than a built in bench might be the way to go. I just find it so hard to visualise what would look good and don’t want to go to loads of effort and expense unless I’m really sure it’ll look nice. When we had our new kitchen Howdens came over, measured and then sent us a design of how it would look. Is there a service like that for living rooms??

Get rid of the door to the right, and change the windows into a patio doors going out to the garden.

We have considered this but it would just lead out onto a small path and then the lawn whereas the room next door is a kitchen diner with big double doors opening out onto the patio. We rarely use the door to the garden that’s in the living room, but it leads out to a smaller patio area with a bench and the washing line so it is used.

OP posts:
maowmaow · 22/06/2025 09:54

And have 2 free standing chairs looking out the the garden.

The window beach looks clunky and will be uncomfortable to use as you can’t lean back on anything to read a book
