Moving radiator...any experience?

Hi all, has anyone moved an existing radiator to a different wall within the same room? Is this a big job? Rough costs? In our box bedroom we want to put our daughter's bed under the window (where radiator currently is), and move the rad to the outside wall. TIA

Depends on the type of radiator. Is it electric or connected to a wet system? Electric is much easier to move and we've done this in a property. We needed an electrician to blank the plate where we moved it from (or add a plug socket). He then added wiring/electric to the other wall. I'm not a plumber, but would assume moving a wet system would be harder/costlier if the pipework isn't already on the wall you want to move it to.

Sorry, that is no help at all, but a hopeful bump to someone who does know.

Have moved/replaced quite a few in a couple of houses, updated to modern designs and mostly vertical ones as gives more options for arranging furniture. Costs a few hundred for a plumber (more recent ones have been £350 ish but we are in the South East) plus some have needed re plastering/skimming behind the old space and obviously redecs, plus the cost of radiators themselves. New ones have much better heat output, Beat Heating have given great service and advice as to what size is best for the room size and good designs/quality

We've done it in a bedroom a few times. If you have carpet then it's a fairly straightforward job, just means lifting the carpet and flooring, laying new pipework and connecting the new radiator.

When we had a quote for doing it a couple of years ago it was going to be about £250-300 I think, including the radiator itself.

Having also moved electrical outlets to a new location, I would actually say that it's more straightforward as an upstairs room shouldn't mean chasing the pipework into the walls/floor.

Not quite the same, but we moved a radiator along a wall, and in another room added one where there wasn’t one previously. Our radiators are on a wet system rather than electric. We did this work before decorating as there was a bit of repair work to the plaster, and the pipes had to be chased under the floorboards, but it was a relatively straightforward job. The work to move the radiators was done in a day. We then did the “making good’ ourselves. We used the company that services our boiler to do the work.

We’ve done it in a few rooms - did one last month which cost £350 in Yorkshire, but we’re in a Victorian property so the pipes are never quite where they think they are and the brick is very thick, so always takes a bit longer than they expect. It’s definitely been worth it for us, but be prepared for some potentially quite big gaps to fill where the previous brackets were.
