Not really sure what I’m after, some advice? Someone to talk me down? I’m a single parent to 3 kids and have a dog; plus I work 2 jobs (about 50 hours a week). I’m selling my house and have been packing bits up and ignoring the garage, which is literally top to bottom with old clothes, toys, etc. My chain are now pushing for a quick exchange and completion (within the next week). I feel so overwhelmed, I have the whole garage to do and the remainders of the rooms that I haven’t finished and the loft, shed, etc. I just feel it’s impossible, I can’t do it. I’m removed 6 sacks full of toys and clothes from the garage today and it hasn’t even made a dent. I feel like crying and like I’m going to go into a meltdown. I don’t know what to do

If it's 'hidden away' in the loft, shed, etc then I'd get a skip in and chuck the lot away. It's just clutter. You have my sympathy with the quantity, I hate clutter.

LoveWine123 · 19/06/2025 19:31

Agree, get a skip and chuck it all out. Be brutal and don’t think twice.

See if you can find a house clearance person. I had someone clear my garage for £80

Thanks so much for these comments, they’re really helpful.
Does anyone know about logistics when moving? I’ve asked for some removal quotes, I have a 4 bed home and one has come back for a 3.5t lorry. That looks extremely small. As I’m in a chain, I presume I would need to fully empty my home before going to the new home. I wouldn’t have both sets of keys at once to make multiple journeys back and forth. Is one journey what normally happens?

Get professional packers in to pack and move you, it is worth every penny. Literally the only thing you need to pack yourself is an overnight bag and keep things like the kettle and tea bags to hand. They'll make sure boxes are properly full but not so heavy they can't be lifted and will stack a van so there's barely a spare inch! You will definitely need to be out of your property before getting the keys for the next.
There's also decluttering type services who can help you to sort out the garage if you've time to hire someone, but failing that a skip and any decent pieces stick them on facebook marketplace for free collection from the garden.

You haven't got time to declutter properly now, I honestly suggest you bite the bullet, get a removal firm that will pack everything for you, suck up the cost and accept that you'll be sorting it out in the new house and throwing some of it away. You need to minimise your stress and that will do it - even though you're putting off the sorting out.
Most removal men are brilliant. Honestly ours were worth their weight in gold. Just hand them the job. Can you afford the extra cost? Have you had a quote based on them packing?
Best of luck @Barnets5pSlots , it's a total headfuck, but you can do it and it's worth it when you arrive in your new place. 🏡
