How much do you actually use your garden in winter?

We have put in an offer for a house which is a bit on the small size, but has a huge beautiful garden. First offer was declined but we’re debating how high we really want to go.
the house itself is a bit of a rarity in this location, they do come up but not often. It’s outskirts of city. DS is 9 and we have lived in a flat all this time (no garden) so this is a big draw.
The issue is that right now, the garden is in full bloom and looks stunning. We can imagine ourselves doing loads of alfresco stuff, as well as putting in a log cabin and just silly things like being able to dry laundry. But realistically, by the time we get in it will be autumn/winter and obviously we will be able to do a lot less out there.
The house itself is small but bigger than our flat and is perfectly fine, but having never had a garden, my question is do you actually ever use yours in the winter months? And if so, how much? Thanks

There are only four months of the year when I don't use my garden, November to February. But even then it's really important as it's the view from my kitchen and living room as I have large windows.

Thanks everyone, that’s been really helpful. I thought I would probably still use it but also wondered if I was just telling myself that because I want the house.
Will call the estate agent in the morning and put in another offer. Fingers crossed!!!

I am afraid I never use our garden in the winter except to add to my compost heap which I think it the most miraculous thing ever!! Hubby seems to be out there lots but he is the gardener.

I'm out there a lot but I love gardening, and a lot of the work gets done in winter - mulching, slowly clearing everything as winter progresses (mostly in late winter), pruning roses, growing hardy annuals. I have a lovely shed to shelter in though, and actually prefer gardening in winter as it's less sweaty 😂

If you're not a keen gardener I can understand not stepping out there until spring... but even then, it's lovely to have outside space. Even if you just use it for socialising and drying laundry.

Only for building snowmen and spending time with my dog in the iglou.

We don’t live in the UK. We barely go into our garden in the summer. It is miserable and hot with temps often around 38+ There are mosquitos and wasps.

In the winter we enjoy playing in the snow. It might be zero outside, but if you get on the proper gear it is quite fun.

We barely step foot outside our back door from November to March. We have young dcs and tend to spend winter months out and about, visiting indoor venues. It's often dark by the time we're home. We're London based and probably spend less time at home than families elsewhere, because there are lots of attractions on our doorstep.

I love our big garden. There's only a couple of months I don't use it massively. Spring is amazing to see stuff come to life, summer all the flowers are out, autumn is spent making crumbles and gin with all the apples and plums and blackberries. Even winter I love. There's some pruning to do but just sitting out wrapped up and reading a book/looking at stars is lovely.

out in mine with the kids all year round ! Wrap up in winter and get out there (saves us having to always take the kids to the park!

we have a mud kitchen which is even more fun after it’s been raining 😝 spend hours out there digging mud and making all sorts of mess!

I get the laundry out there on any dry days

happily sit out there wrapped up with a cup of tea - we have wonderful wildlife out there to and I love being out there amongst it all

my kids need a good run around everyday - I can’t cope with them in the house al day

We use ours load in winter. Mainly because it has a summer house (that we use in winter
also). It’s got electric so we have a heater and a TV and there’s many winter evenings we sit in there looking onto the garden with a cuppa/wine. We feel like we’ve gone out without actually leaving our property, and get to be in the garden all year to some degree

Autumn, I tend to be tidying/pruning. I'll go out every couple of weeks to have a look around at plants, see how they're doing, but that's about it. Unless we have a week of constant wet weather or close to freezing, my washing goes outside. We do have friends who have lovely garden furniture and sit out every couple of weeks around a fire pit. They have lights around the garden, blankets and sit out there with a drink and nibbles. I guess it depends on what sort of people you are.

If you can manage the garden and the house is right for you, then I wouldn't worry about the size of the garden.

Not a lot but the use we get from it from March to October is more than worth it.
