Cost to build a small shoe cupboard

Can I ask the wise people of MN- how much would you say it should cost to build a small shoe cupboard? I have no clue about these things so don’t want to get ripped off but equally happy to pay the right price for a decent job. It’ll be a similar size to the picture but shaker style doors, gold handles and painted. Thanks so much

Do you mean if you ask a carpenter? IME you can add a few hundred to the cost of the one you posted. Also depends on materials you are using.

I have asked a carpenter and I’ve been quoted just shy of £1000. I’ve asked for a plain, shaker style cupboard with gold handles. I put the picture above for an idea of size. This seems a lot to me but I don’t have a clue how much it ‘should’ cost, hence me asking here for a rough idea if anyone might be in the know with these sorts of things

Carpenters can be very expensive. I’d shop around though. I’ve had wardrobes done for anything from £500-£4000 depending on size. If you want a shaker style you’ll be paying more I imagine.

You’re probably better off buying one ready made and customising it with paint/handles yourself?

£1000 rip off - get some more quotes -

The gold handles are probably £700 of that £1000.

Go for stainless steel and it will be significantly cheaper.

I’ve found ones that I like on Amazon for a tenner and sent these to him

That’s what I was thinking but I haven’t got a clue so was only going on my gut instinct

Can you just buy a shoe cupboard and put whatever handles you want on it?

oceanaus · 14/06/2025 22:31

Yes I could but I just wanted something built in really so it looks nice and neat. A lot of people seem to use carpenters so surely it can’t be that £££. If that’s the cost of a shoe cupboard how do people afford a room full of wardrobes?!

We had several quotes from carpenters to put in three drawers under the stairs. Quotes ranged from £700 to £900.

Smaller jobs tend to be more expensive comparatively as there are economies of scale for bigger jobs.

I have to be honest, I don’t see many people using a carpenter for wardrobes. It’s a much more expensive option, albeit excellent quality.

We’re saving up for a media wall and a hidden door and that’s going to be around £2000. Skilled carpenters are expensive but a good one is worth their weight in gold!

Mumofboys2006 · 21/06/2025 21:14

@SpidersAreShitheads- that’s quite reasonable. We live in London and something like that would set you back about £4-5k.

ive been quoted £2.7k for under stairs storage!

oceanaus · 24/06/2025 00:41

I got another quote that was far cheaper. The original quote was nearly £1k, when the guy came to measure up it was £1800. No explanation as to why it was so much more and when I said we were excepting close to the original price he said he couldn’t physically do it for any less. I said that’s fine, it’s too much for us so we’ll have to park it for now. He’s chased me every day to see if I’ve changed my mind. This screams overpriced to me, otherwise he wouldn’t be chasing me for business
