Do I need a survey?

We are currently looking to purchase a bungalow. Looks like built around 1070s… roof looks good new windows guttering etc. We won’t need a mortgage, so do I need to get a survey?

Personally, I think you would be mad not to get one. Houses can 'look' fine but have some very expensive problems. My roof looks good too from ground level. In fact it needs a complete re-roof - and it's not a dodgy roofer telling me that.

Even if you don't need a mortgage, I imagine you'd prefer no expensive surprises.

Of course you need a survey!

I know someone distantly who bought a bungalow and didn't bother with a survey. More fool them. It has been a disaster, the latest being that part of the roof has had to be replaced as it was totally rotten and about to collapse.

We recently purchased our new home and were on the fence about the survey. So happy we decided to get one !!! There was issues with damp detected, the electric box and the gable end of the house needed pointing. We got money off the property in the end.

It really depends on whether anything would be a deal breaker for you. Do you have the funds or the means to fund repairs should they arise? If I'm honest all the surveys I've had have identified the obvious faults I could see anyway and failed to identify significant and expensive issues including roofing issues, damp course issues and plumbing and drainage issues.

We are in the process of purchasing a bungalow, built around the same time. Looking at it, it appears to be in great nick. But we were advised by our solicitor to get a survey so we have just instructed a surveyor this morning. We wanted to save the money but I guess its money well spent for peace of mind, or to get an idea if there is anything we may need to spend money on now, or in the near future. So yes, I would get a survey done.

Thanks everyone. Looks like I would be crazy not to get a survey. We are using savings to partly fund this purchase and can’t afford any nasty surprises…
