Any tips for reupholstering a headboard?

A floor standing one... The ones for sale online with patterned fabric or gorgeous but so expensive. I'm wondering if I could buy a plain square one and try recovering it myself.
I'm reasonably experienced at dressmaking but never done any upholstery.
Is this mad? Do I need to add wadding as well as new fabric?
Any tips / how to video recommendations welcome 😊

im afraid i can't help, but I am also wondering about doing this. I think you would need wadding. i think they definitely look doable with a bit of diy & sewing skill.

i also want to make proper curtains with pelmets - similar to doing a headboard i think.

You can get the long pin things to hold it where you want it and then cover with the button things. I've just read my own post and realised it's twaddle.

I covered my entire king sized bed.... A good staple gun is your best friend! The headboard already had padding so I reused that but if it hadn't I would have used a combination of fire retardant upholstery foam (against the board) covered in upholstery wadding. You can then add a layer of calico to give it structure (also helps protect you finishing fabric). Finally you add your top fabric - start at the front and go a couple of inches over to the back - staple in place and then make a cover piece for the back of the board to make it tidy. It's very satisfying and I've got the bug! I've done several chairs, stools and ottomans for other people.

This is so helpful thank you.
Did you take the old material off the whole bed? I'm assuming you also took the whole thing apart too? If I was covering a new headboard in nicer fabric would I need to take off the original fabric do you think or could I staple on new over the top?
I also hadn't thought about making a back panel - was this a rectangular shape and did you hem the edges before stapling it on?
Thanks so much 🙂
