wood burner in extension

I’d like to install a wood stove in my new extension, so no existing chimney or fireplace. I guess this means “flu” installation. I hate those unsightly double walled flues which look completely disproportional to the width of stoves. I never saw them anywhere else but the UK. So first question - does anyone know if I have to have those double walled ugly pipes? Second question - has anyone paid for this type of installation lately & how much did it cost?

I paid for a woodburner 3 months ago, no chimney, i live in a bungalow, flue goes straight up into ceiling and out of roof, woodburner and installation £4,500.

wow that’s expensive!

Why dont you have it boxed in?

chainchinycho · 07/06/2025 19:58

not sure - the boxed in look might look even worse. also I think one would need special coatings fire resistant board etc...

You also need to consider your insurance policy. Some insurers deem the house uninsurable if a wood burner is installed. Make sure to read your policy!

Your neighbours might not appreciate it. Wood stoves in single storeys like bungalows and extensions are not great for dispersing the smell up and away high enough.
Have you had a stove before? The wood makes a lot of mess. Also not great if you are scared of bugs and spiders.

It's pretty clean nowadays as nice dry logs make very little smoke and the fireplace vacuums make cleaning super quick and dustless.

Dont scare monger, simply ensure your burner is disclosed

Good point, I'll look into this thank you!

Wood burner def going in, neighbours have been informed, they're far away, it doesn't affect them (and turned out they've got one too!)

Does anyone know about this double wall flue installation, can the thick part be outside, and any others with experience on cost s recently?
