Moving house - what did I forget???

Hello there.

What is the thing that you forgot to do before moving day? Tell me anything, from the wildest to the most deeply dull.

I am moving in seven days and basically carrying this chronic worry around that I have 'forgotten something.'

I would like to therefore try to make a list for myself of commonly forgettable things. I am coming here for this because if such a task is fun and interactive I will most likely retain the information inside 'interested, social brain.; This generally seems to have more room in it than 'practical admin boring stuff brain.' It is a bit like that difference between meal stomach and pudding stomach. And, yes, lol, ADHD.

Thank you!

Make sure you've got loo roll and hand wash in the first box you take into the house.

You might want to consider getting the locks changed on day 1 or shortly thereafter.

I agree that constructing and making beds is one of the first jobs you should do because it's the last thing you'll want to do when sweaty and knackered. I usually transport our bedding in zip-up garden waste bags:

Don't forget to have any medication, special food or treats on hand for the cat to get it settled (assign it a room away from noise and kerfuffle whilst unloading is occuring).

Also, I learned from experience - try make sure the cat has done a number 2 that day before getting on the road. Otherwise you get an unhappy, poop laden cat in a basket with no way to help it.

exciting to read this tips. love the one about shoving all the bedding in a huge laundry bag - great idea. also loo rolls, i hadn't really thought of that.

maybe i should treat the essentials like going to an airbnb - basic box with toilet roll, soap, hand towel, tea towel, washing up liquid etc. and over night bag.

we've not moved since we had kids so it feels like i have a lot to do, and forget to do! so appreciating the tips.

mumonthehill · 11/06/2025 14:16

Oh if moving with kids ensure favourite toys, teddies are in the ready to go bag so at hand at bedtime. Also have a box or bag of toys to play with immediately. It can also be nice for them not to have clean bedding the first night so it smells like the home they have just left.

Arrange for someone to take bulky unwanted furniture to the tip/recycling centre. Council slots might take ages!

Great thread waiting for a date for exchange.
There was a thread recently about looking after and tipping removal people. Hadn’t thought of a tip!
Im planning on leaving soft drinks and snacks in the beer fridge here ( taking it with us) and putting the kettle, tea, coffee and sugar mugs etc in the car so I can make drinks at our new house.
I’ve also prepped an overnight bag as others have suggested. Basics for the dogs too not quite decided how to manage them on the day yet though. I’m expecting lots of barking.

Pack a suitcase, like you're going on holiday/work trip for a week. That way you can live out of the suitcase rather than scrabbling around in boxes for things you need.

I was wondering what people do with dogs on moving day. Maybe at a friends house for the day so they have a nice calm day before seeing all their stuff in the new house.

Remember to lock the cat in the night before. Ours vanished on the day and had to be retrieved that evening when she marched in on the new owners.

😂The best thing to do with cats is to put them in a cattery for a few days either side of the move and collect them once you are reasonably settled in to the new place. It also means you haven't got to worry about where to put them in the new place and concerns about people opening doors all over the place and letting them escape.

caringcarer · 11/06/2025 15:35

Get locks changed in new house. Buy a new toilet seat to fit as soon as you move in. Kettle, mugs and coffee, tea bags in a separate box with loo roll and hand wash.

Mamamia35 · 11/06/2025 20:20

Keeping note of these.

Thanks for starting this thread.

We're moving in a couple of months and I'm stressing about it already.

My dog walker took mine for an overnight as packing stresses her out and then she came back to the new house when we were in.

No good if you're moving hours away.

I put a list of every single thing in each box on my iPad and then labelled the boxes. Placed in sections in the garage for what room it was going in in the new house. Even tonight I couldn't remember if I'd unpacked birthday candles so I searched and it told me what box it was in and my second list told me where the box is now.

As soon as the removal guy asked if there was an X I sent my son to the chippy for food and drinks for them.

HappyOldCrone · 11/06/2025 20:50

We always put cats/dogs in cattery/kennels for a couple of days either side of a house move. Much less stressful for us and them. Then you can pick them up when the furniture/house is semi-straight. Also easier for keeping the cat in for a week or so. We even did this when we moved from Sussex to Wales. Just meant we had to make a day trip back to pick them up.
