Conservatory colour

Hi, we are in the process of choosing a replacement for our old conservatory and are debating between white pvc or anthracite frames. It will have a solid roof and will be plastered and painted white inside. Our garden is very sunny but not massive.

We have a massive dilemma to decide the colour of the frames, white pvc or anthracite.
We want a light room that won’t make the garden look smaller and will be seen as an asset to the house if we were to sell.
our mind is telling us we should go anthracite as more modern etc, but I’m panicking about making the wrong decision. Has any of you made a similar decision? What did you go for and did you regret it in any way?

Thanks!

What colour are the rest of your windows? I'd be inclined to match.

Bedofroses85 · 04/06/2025 23:29

They are white. That’s also a reason to have doubts

I would personally do white to match your other windows, white is also a style that won’t age. Is there a price difference?

We are also looking at replacing our conservatory. Are you using your existing foundations and simply building a new frame on top?

AFrogInABog · 05/06/2025 06:52

What colour is the brickwork of your house? If it’s red brick I would definitely go with white as the anthracite will not go with it

DongDingBell · 05/06/2025 07:04

White!
The anthracite frames heat up massively in the sun.

We had to decide on the colour of our sliders and windows in our recent extension that replaced our conservatory and went for white in the end. It’s classic and won’t date. Our windows are also white. Don’t regret our decision.

Can I ask what your quotes are for the replacement please? Also what sort of roof are you having?

Seventimesaday · 05/06/2025 09:10

White won’t date. Anthracite grey out / white in will probably be around 15% dearer, maybe more.
Although it is classed as a standard colour these days there is an additional cost to buy in the coloured profile.

Hi, thank you so much for your comments!
so to answer some questions, we are leaving the foundation and replacing windows, frames and roof, basically everything you can see.
Currently it has brown wooden frames with a glass roof.
Roof will be solid with grey tiles effect. It will be plastered white inside, same as all other walls.
I’ll double check when I get home but I think the cost difference between white and anthracite is about £1,500.
I’ll need to check brick colour as well!
I guess one my doubts about white is whether it will look really old fashioned and potentially put people off if we were to sell.
Again thanks all,

I don’t think it will be old fashioned!

We also have an old brown wooden frame which is in desperate need of replacing. The problem we have is the bottom panels are also wood and not brick so we will have to replace like with like and have to do a weird upvc panel on the bottom. I’d much prefer brick.

I think go with white! Especially if it matches your windows.

Hi, it’s about £25,000 in total

Apologies just seen your post.

I'm sorry but I don't think a conservatory adds value to a house at all.

£25k would go a long way towards an extension which would add value, so it would be worth getting quotes for an extension instead, either brick or modular.

Navigatinglife100 · 06/06/2025 14:38

We've got upvc white. Fits our house colour (black and white) and the white upvc windows. Happy to send a photo in private messages if you'd like one?

HatesHorsesLovesShein · 06/06/2025 14:44

I think it will look like a right old hodge podge if you have grey and your windows are white.

I don’t think conservatories increase value of a house though, often quite the opposite.

Navigatinglife100 · 06/06/2025 18:00

Can't believe ours will have reduced the value of our house. Not arguing some.might though.

Bedofroses85 · 06/06/2025 22:47

Sorry for the late replies. I understand extensions would add value to a house whereas conservatories might not, however we do not have the budget nor the need for an additional room in the traditional sense. We are after a garden room to use when it might not be warm or dry enough to sit in the garden. My comment re adding value should have been better rephrased as we do not want to put prospective buyers off for having chosen the wrong colour frames.
A lot of you have highlighted mismatched windows might not be the way to go so we are thinking white might be the way forwards.

Thanks all for your help, it’s been massively helpful x
