Long Ashton

We’re looking to relocate to the Bristol area. We really like the look of Long Ashton, for it’s good community vibe, primary school (for DD1 and DD2), and also access to countryside while still being to Bristol for work etc. would be interested in views on Long Ashton as a place to live, and also any recommendations for other areas we should consider. Thanks so much!😊

The village is good. Not many facilities - no library etc.
Primaries are ok.
The secondary is by bus but there are 2 at least so kids rather split between them. And the cost for one of them is £900 per child a year...
I would say there is a lot of bullying and poor behaviour at the secondaries

Thanks Georgeia3, good to know about the secondaries. We’re moving from Oxford with a 1 and 2 year old so at this stage focusing on the primaries for now. Sounds like if we move to LA we’ll need to look at going private for secondary or move again. It’s really tough to work out what the right area is, from a distance. We’ve be been travelling down as much as we can, and as work and childcare allows. Also looked at WOT, Henleaze etc, but ideally we don’t want to live in the city. We’d like a bit more space /access to countryside / walks close by

Depends on where in Bristol you need access to for work etc, there are some nice villages & small towns to the north into S Gloucestershire.

ManicMinor · 30/05/2025 20:13

Secondary school feels like a long way away, I know, but you’re making this move to immerse yourself into the community, ideally you won’t want to move again away from what you’ve built at that stage. So I’d at least give the secondaries situation a bit of consideration. School quality etc can change over time but they often don’t as much as you’d think!

It does get very busy all around Long Ashton during the balloon fiesta week. One of the local fields is used as a caravan site for the exhibitors/balloon crews. (I don't live in Long Ashton but used to commute past it).
Where will you be working?

Feelingstrange2 · 01/06/2025 02:11

Are there a lot of students in LA? My DBF went there for art in the late 80s - is part of UWE there? I mention it to be aware of student let areas for living and HMOs.

NoisySheep · 01/06/2025 06:31

Thanks for additional posts, I’ll be working in the temple meads area mostly.

How would you get into the city, bus, cycle or drive? Parking will be your main issue. If you’re by Temple Meads why not move somewhere with a train station like Nailsea or Backwell?
Long Ashton is nice but I’d be bored.

TreesOfGreen99 · 01/06/2025 06:59

Do you definitely want to be in Bristol? If working near Temple Meads there are lots of lovely places in Bath & Wiltshire that are a short commute.

Imcomingovertoyourplace · 01/06/2025 07:09

@TreesOfGreen99Long Ashton isn’t Bristol it’s North Somerset, it’s a leafy village.

PeachTrifle · 01/06/2025 07:16

I would suggest looking at Backwell, not much further out and excellent schools.

pambeesleyhalpert · 01/06/2025 08:17

Henleaze and WOT are lovely and much more young family vibe

pambeesleyhalpert · 01/06/2025 08:17

Also check out Coombe dingle, it’s super close to both but houses are much cheaper. Again lots of families

CharlotteCChapel · 01/06/2025 21:45

I second Nailsea as a better place. I used to commute through Long Ashton, buses only, and it was clogged up during school terms. The train station in Naiksea gets you to Temple Meads in around 15 minutes.
The schools there are pretty good.

herebehippos · 01/06/2025 22:28

Came on to say Nailsea and backwell would meet your criteria. I can see others agree with me! Long ashton is over priced and under resourced imo. We currently live in Nailsea and are in the process of moving to a bigger property in backwell.

MrsMoastyToasty · 01/06/2025 22:42

I would move to one of the satellite towns with a railway station such as Nailsea, Yate of Keynsham.

I have either lived, worked or have family and friends in each of these places .

NoisySheep · 04/06/2025 16:26

Thank you all so much for your posts. Really helpful ideas for other towns/areas of Bristol to consider. We’re in the process of making day trips to explore the area more and visit schools etc. will definitely add Backwell, Nailsea, Yate, Keynsham, Coombe Dingle to our list of places to check out! Thanks again 🙏😊

We live in long ashton and love it! There is much more to the village than people who drive through know. We have beautiful woods, good primary schools and a good community centre with mums clubs/film nights/ classes etc. I’ve had a baby in the village and feel the community is strong. We have three pubs. If you cycle you can get into temple meads in 20/25min pretty much off-road so the easiest way to commute to work. No direct bus to temple meads though. I used to live near henleaze and WOT and I feel long ashton feels more rural. We only have 1 coffee shop and charity shop. Depends what you want. Because of lots of us have moved to the village out of Bristol there is quite a lot of young professionals starting families. V difficult to get an affordable 3/4 bedroom house though that isn’t a doer upper. Lots of older people moving on. Backwell is nice and train station. Nailsea is cheaper but different feel so depends what you want. Likely long ashton will get a lot of houses though so could feel less rural in 10 years.
