Tell me where to move to

I’ve been wanted to move for a while now. I’ve been searching on rightmove for literally years but on the past year or two there has been so little on the market .
Please help me find an area or house that would be suitable because I’m exhausted with all the thinking.

I have family in West Sussex and am looking for a house within a two hour drive, close to a train station with good links to that area. What I am looking for:

House with a level garden preferably, not overlooked.
Not too much work, so move in order if possible
Non estate preferably
active community with plenty going on or near to a town or city that has things to join, stuff to do. I am interested in yoga, walking, films etc
Close to beautiful unspoilt countryside
Away from main or arterial roads /flightpaths
Three to four good sized bedrooms
Not North facing
Preferably detached
Friendly area

Budget is up to £800,000 but would prefer to spend £700,000 as otherwise will have no money for anything else beyond the move.

I have lived in Worcs and Gloucestershire before and like both , particularly Stroud area, Pershore. I’m looking for a village or small town really. I also love the area around Bath . My budget doesn’t get much really fits the bill. Also Wiltshire would be an option.

I’m so exhausted with it all I can’t face putting my house in the market in case we don’t find anything.

How about Cirencester/Tetbury and the surrounding villages?

Salisbury

Emsworth

Rhiwbina is regularly voted as one of the nicest parts of Cardiff. Trains from Cardiff to London are two hours and there’s plenty to do in the city, and close to beaches and mountains as well as all the classes, cafe’s restaurants and shops you could need. This house is in a conservation area and I think it’s beautiful (but way out of my price range) https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/160945394

Check out this 3 bedroom semi-detached house for sale on Rightmove

Get a map, draw a circle at 2 hrs, plot the trainlines and narrow your search that way.

Do you need good public transport connections?

I don’t want to have to rely on a car all th time if possible so that would be useful.

Emsworth

That’s somewhere I have my eye on having heard about it on here but nothing seems to come up on my budget.

Yes love all that area and know it well. Again, nothing seems to come up that fits the bill.

Stroud has lively views but hilly everywhere. Cheltenham has a lot of private schools also bars & restaurants.

XVGN · 31/05/2025 07:58

Romsey. Smack bang between Salisbury and Southampton. Good rail link.

Rye. Close to Hastings and Ashford. Rail links but a little slow.

Good luck

XVGN · 31/05/2025 07:59

Many people would suggest Horsham, but I can never get the love for the place.

Clinicalwaste · 31/05/2025 16:28

What about looking in the square of Chichester, Arundel, mid hurst and pet worth. Actually in West Sussex. I was also thinking Salisbury. Your list of wants describes Chichester and the surrounding countryside quite well. May be an idea to narrow the search area by visiting some areas that fir the bill and see how you feel about them.

Bluevelvetsofa · 31/05/2025 16:50

I agree with @Clinicalwaste

Public transport is reasonable, to London, Brighton, Southampton, Portsmouth. South Downs and the beach. Shoreham by Sea, Ferring, East Preston, Arundel, Barnham, Midhurst, Southborne, Bosham, Emsworth. I found houses in Emsworth in your price bracket.
