Honest opinions on living in Worthing Town centre

I am moving to Worthing from Hove and am looking for a period house with some outside space and original character. East Worthing is appealing but I cannot find a property that feels ‘doable’ and those that have been recently redecorated but not to my taste and so redoing feels wasteful (indulgent). I prefer not to live in a very residential area and I will want to be able to walk to town, seafront and to be able to enjoy a round trip that would take about 1 hour (just the walking time there and back). In particular the roads near Waitrose in the town I don’t know - what are the pros and cons? I would really appreciate some honest feedback and pointers from those who have recent experience of living in Worthing. Many thanks

I live on the outskirts of Worthing. Portland road has some interesting properties but in the town centre, outdoor space is limited

East Worthing is a bit meh, but look around the Splash point end of town - there’s a great vibe going on at Coast cafe

thanks for replies - my budget is around £700K and if there is anyone who is thinking of selling and wants to venture into a private transaction please message me!

For most answers just get into Worthing and look around for yourself.

The centre can be rowdy at night so avoid the main thoroughfares if you are not a confident person. Same as Brighton really, so you know all about that.

I'd wait for a home in Warwick Place to come up. I like the vibe there.

But for goodness sake, load up the Area360 RM add-in for Chrome and make sure you avoid flood risk areas. Worthing is very prone.

I’d look at West Worthing or Tarring / Broadwater then. East Worthing always seems a bit grittier and less tree-lined apart from the roads behind the Citroen garage.

Thanks - i appreciate the tip on the flood risk as i had thought vaguely about this but will explore further. Your feedback is very helpful and I appreciate you taking the time to respond.
I think i will need to rent for an interim so this will give me a chance perhaps to live locally and get a feel for where i want to be. Time is an issue for me health wise and i really want to be settled by the end of the year but i need to accept what happens.

I can comment well having lived all over London and Brighton too. Can confirm Worthing is a great place if you want:
-A lovely quiet beach
-Beautiful countryside and walking nearby
-Friendly safe community, quite diverse and queer friendly
-Very good cafes restaurants pubs and bars (both traditional and also natural wines bars and small plates etc, craft breweries for Brighton vibes)
-Good schools
-Leafy parks
-Decent town centre with walkable shops
-Three train stations(!) and an easy enough commute straight to Victoria/East Croydon/Clapham, and Brighton of course
-Decent parking (especially compared to Brighton)
-And affordable homes! I bought my three bedroom house in a good area for only 30k more than my one bedroom flat in Brighton-For us it's been a no brainer and we love it, we're in our 30s and lots of our friends are following suit.
-Best areas: Check it out in person. Personally we're near the station on a leafy nice street, Tarring (West) is also desirable. But the best way to ascertain is to go and walk around.

Thanks, I have now moved to Worthing and I am near splash point. Reviews of this area are mixed but I really wanted to be near beach. I have to do more work than I had expected but this is my last home and I think it’s a good spot
