Carpet fitting issue - advice?

We had a carpet fitted in my son's bedroom last week. The previous carpet was one of those rough commercial type carpets (the room was previously a home office). Before ripping up the old carpet we painted the skirting boards black. The new carpet is dark grey. The fitter arrived, fitted the carpet, mentioned something to DP about the skirting board being non-standard, took his money and off he went. I got home from work and had a look and could clearly notice areas where the carpet looked like it had been cut short - see pics attached.

I phoned the carpet shop and sent the pictures through. They agreed over the phone that it looked like it had been cut short in places and would send someone out to have a look. Sent someone on Saturday who said they wouldn't be overly happy with it in their house and that the fitter shouldn't have started if he didn't think he could do a good job (referring to the skirting board).

Fast forward, the guy who came out has spoken to the fitter who said he drew DPs attention to the skirting board being non-standard and therefore is saying he has covered himself (DPs recollection was that the skirting was only mentioned after the job was finished). The fitter has said he will come and replace it but only if we fit new skirting board. The carpet shop have offered us half of the fitting fee back (£50).

Can anyone give me some advice?

(I'm also 37 weeks pregnant so needing to get his room back in shape before baby arrives / hormones all over the place!)

What is it about the skirting boards that’s non standard? That just looks like the fitter has done a bad job and should rightfully fix it

What does the skirting have to do with how well they can fit a carpet? Were they worried about the knee kicker things damaging the black paintwork?

The skirting goes right down to the floor boards. Apparently "standard" skirting has a gap underneath that the carpet gets tucked under. There is no gap between this skirting and the floor. That's how the guy who came out to look at it explained it anyway ...

I've had several houses varying in age including a 15th century cottage with no skirting boards (as far as I remember), Victorian, 1970's & now live in one built in 1980's. None have had gap between floorboards & skirting for carpet to tuck under.

Isn't that what carpet gripper is for ?
Securing the edges?

Exactly that, I've never seen a skirting with a gap underneath! (Apart from accidental ones, where the floor is old and wonky like in our house.)

Carpet dies not getting fitted under a skirting board. Gripper is fixed close to but not touching the skirting board, the fitter then uses a knee kicker to stretch the carpet and uses a tool to ensure the carpet is held tight by the gripper.
If this guy is talking about tucking a carpet under the skirting board, he is not qualified to do the job.
I would expect them to get someone (else) to attempt refitting, if that doesn't work I would expect a free replacement carpet and fitting.

Ours has got a small gap, 1930s house,
