COAT paint. OMG, is there a cheaper, good alternative?

I'm painting the interior of my 2 bed house. When I say I'm painting what I mean is I'm paying someone to do it as I can't for numerous reasons. It's a new build and spacious in all the rooms but not huge. I've just used their paint calculator for the upstairs 2 bedrooms, 1 ensuite and the family bathroom. I deducted the windows and all doors but couldn't calculate for the almost fully tiled family bathroom and ensuite. One of bedroom 2 walls is actually a built in wardrobe so won't be painted.

£518.00!!!!!!!

I can't believe how paint can cost so much. And that the paint alone will end up costing more than the person is charging for the work.doing the job.

So, allegedly Albany can match any colour but I've never used it. But is there a good paint out there that doesn't cost the earth???

Huh that’s just for the paint ?!

wisteriadrive · 16/05/2025 13:23

We use dulux and it’s fine.

PickleSarnie · 16/05/2025 13:26

I know this isn't what you want to hear but Coat paint is really lovely paint with a gorgeous finish.

Have you used discount code in those figures? This one is 20% off and seems to still work: CCDI20

I haven't seen the code but that's very helpful thank you.
They sent me the stackable colour scheme tester thongs and they are gorgeous.

Paint is expensive these days. We have just had a bedroom painted using COAT and it looks great. The decorator had never used it before, but was very impressed.

Coat paint? Fill me in… is it really really good?

Sayshesheshe · 16/05/2025 14:47

I’m such a Coat paint convert, it’s got excellent coverage and lovely tone.

MellowPinkDeer · 16/05/2025 15:02

Go to b&q and get the velspar premium colour matched.

Velspar colour matching is awful, I had a Dulux off the shelf colour mixed, as it had been out of stock for ages. It was an terrible match. Their furniture paint is horrible and the wall paint smells dreadful.

Dulux trade emulsion is fine. Tikkurula is good if you want to push the boat out.

All paint is ridiculously expensive these days. COAT is especially expensive but it is gorgeous to work with and lovely colour.

Valspar goes on nicely too (I think I had it before and after their smelly phase) but comes away with the masking tape rather a lot, I think it’s basically liquid plastic - not an issue if there’s a professional not using tape of course

Our decorator hadn't used it before but he really rated it. Unlike F&B that everyone curses. We have Coat Pudding in a few of our rooms and I love it so much - it really changes with the light and has a lovely chalky finish but feels quite tolerant to being wiped occasionally.

Downside is, because the names are just random objects/things as opposed to ridiculous "Dead Salmon" "Elephants Breath" etc it's more difficult to find examples online of other people using it in their rooms for inspiration.

Ilovemyshed · 16/05/2025 15:12

I have found Valspat V&Co dead flat matt paint to be brilliant. Easy to use, goes on beautifully, gorgeous matt finish and washable. They often have a three for two offer around bank holidays.

Paganpentacle · 16/05/2025 15:17

Dulux matte can be mixed to ANY colour. I've taken a lampshade in before now and it was exactly the right match.

Its really durable and can be wiped down.
Although thats not cheap either so probs tally up around the same ...

Coat is absolutely the best I’ve used. If you can afford it, splash out

Gardendiary · 16/05/2025 15:39

Johnstones paint is excellent, used by decorators and will mix basically any shade going.

Disagree. I’ve had it matched to coat, lick and F&b the colour and coverage has always been excellent.

Sera1989 · 16/05/2025 15:45

If the decorator is charging less than £500 then I think you're getting a bargain for the work! I was quoted £2.5k for a three-bed a few years ago.
I've always used Leyland Trade paint, I believe it's colour matchable. I've heard very mixed reviews about Valspar. I've only used the outdoor paint and that was great but wouldn't take a chance on the indoor ones.

Geneticsbunny · 16/05/2025 16:02

@Sera1989 that's the price for the paint not the decorating.

BelfastBard · 16/05/2025 16:10

I use Decorating Centre Online and get them to mix up Coat shades in their Johnstones trade paint. I’ve two rooms recently done in Factor Fifty and I truthfully can’t tell the difference between it and the rooms done in actual Coat paint. And I never say that about any paint. Decorating Centre online are also really helpful to bounce ideas off!

Edited to add, I’ve also had rooms done with their colour matched Leyland Trade paint and it’s excellent too.

I second this. I colour matched Valspar to a farrow and ball shade once and it was horrendous. Nothing like the true farrow and ball finish or shade. It was so bad I had it painted over with Farrow And Ball. The difference was like night and day.
