Smelly shower trap

I have noticed a drain smell in the shower trap. I clean it regularly. Remove the top and cup thing. Proper clean and remove the accumulated hair and soap scum (ugh) but not sure what else to do?

Any suggestions? Trap is one of these in photo.

drain cleaner helps. seems to need it avery couple of months or so.

Ours goes directly into the soil pipe, so it does smell if I remove the bit you've pictured. But when it is in place correctly there is no smell. Check the rubber washer that holds the top bit in place is around its rim properly. Ours was off for a while till I noticed and put it back on. You do keep the cup part filled with water, don't you? The water is what is stopping the smells coming up.

We've got one of those. Hate hate hated having to clean it. Shudder. So I just leave it out now and the water goes straight down the drain thing. No smells 🤷‍♂️

Thanks. I cleaned the cup out so it was dry so maybe now it’s full of water again it will improve. I poured some white vinegar and boiling water down too. Don’t like those highly toxic drain cleaners usually.

I changed the silver bit in ours to a plain cover so it could drain more easily (as shown).
I use mould spray left on for a while to clean the cup part.

Yes it always has to have water in the cup to block the smells from coming up out of the waste pipes (same reason we have a U bend under the sink which keeps the smells away)

We’ve just started to use little sticks that sit in the cup thing you e pictured. You pop one in every month and so far they seem to be working. We got ours from here -

Half a bag of soda crystals followed by a kettle full of water will sort that out.

BunsenBurnerBaby · 12/05/2025 10:38

We had a smelly one of those unless we used it every day. Keep fresh water in it.

They need to be full of water otherwise the rancid drain air can come up through - like a toilet U-bend.
Otherwise a dose of drain cleaner might help?

Seymourscat · 12/05/2025 12:27

Thanks all. Hope it improves!
