Help!
DD is looking to rent around Ludgate Hill. Any advise please?
She’s moving to be close to work. Is in her twenties and keen to live life to the full.

Ludgate Hill is not at all residential.

Somewhere on the Thameslink line would be good for City Thameslink.

SummerInSun · 11/05/2025 15:57

I work there. Absolutely fine as a neighbourhood to work in, but you definitely do not want to live there. Dead as anything on weekends, other than tourists at St Paul’s. And there is a lot of construction work on Fleet St, so buildings that used to have ground floor shops (Boots, Sainsburys, independent cafes) have largely been flattened.

Get a map of London, draw a 3km circle and she’d still be within walking distance of the office and you’ll scoop up a lot of more interesting areas. But frankly I wouldn’t be too fussed, as PP have said, it’s super close to City Thameslink, and also Blackfriars station for the District and Circle Lines and not far from St Paul’s or Chancery Lane on the Central Line.

The only residence in Ludgate Hill is the official residence of the Bishop of London.

You need to be looking 3 or 4 miles out.

HundredMilesAnHour · 11/05/2025 16:41

Look around Clerkenwell or Barbican if she has the budget to rent in those areas. If not, she’ll need to look further out as previous posters have suggested.

eurochick · 11/05/2025 18:56

There is really nowhere there to live as others have said. There’s a few apartments in King’s Wardrobe just off Ludgste Hill but they will be pricey. It would be better to look at Southwark, Borough, Shoreditch, Farringdon if she wants to be close.

CleanShirt · 11/05/2025 18:58

What's her budget? Is she sharing?

Ludgate Hill isn't really residential.

flowerdeluxe · 11/05/2025 19:27

We lived in Herbal Hill which would be walking distance (17 mins walk) from there. It was great living centrally, having easy river walks and walkable to Islington and Shoreditch, John Soane's Museum, Sadler's Wells and Exmouth Market. Other areas within walking distance of Ludgate Hill are Barbican, Farringdon, Clerkenwell, Old St, Chancery Lane. Places further out will be cheaper, but if she has the budget she may prefer to live closer in. We certainly found it less stressful not to have to depend on trains or tube.

Dreamgazer · 11/05/2025 20:53

wow. Thank you so much to each and every one of you for replying. Really appreciate this. DC wants to be close to LSE and has decided not to share. They think some of the courtyards/squares/alleyways off ludgate hill are cute! Will give him all your feedback which is pretty consistent.

There are some flats there - a friend was going to buy one. He decided against because the shop downstairs could well have become a restaurant at some time in the future, Most of the flat were above 'premises'. Mind you, this was 20 years ago.

Hermiaxx · 11/05/2025 22:43

Studio apartments in that area start at £1800 pcm. It’s great living in/near The City! It’s not known as residential but approximately 9000 people do!

Heronwatcher · 11/05/2025 23:11

Yeah very few 20 somethings live around there. Most people who work there will commute at least half an hour, if not more. The only people who I knew who lived there were men in their 40s/ 50s who lived there in the week and went back to their families at the weekends, when it was completely dead.

Your DC needs to work out what his budget is and then spend some time in various neighbourhoods, test the commute, see if he likes the feel of the place. Ludgate hill has at least 6 stations (rail/ thameslink/ tube) close by so he is likely to have loads of options.

BangersAndGnash · 12/05/2025 09:28

For living life to the full in London 20-somethings need to be on a tube line that runs 24 hours at the weekend, and has a good night bus connection .

Good cafes and pubs and cheap eats, a supermarket, a gym.

Whats the budget?

Carolineer · 12/05/2025 10:11

Ludgate is easily acessible from most of London in terms of tube/ bus - they need to decide where to live in London and work from there, most of zone 2 will be easily accessible. As well as tube lines look at the Thameslink line -Blackfirars and City Thamslink stations are next to Ludgate Hill and places that are not on tube lines are slightly cheaper/ you get more for your money. I worked in Ludgate for 10+ years and lived along this line in both North and South London - its a quick 15 minute journey from Loughborough Junction / Herne Hill to Ludgate (convenient for Brixton/ Camberwell and surrounding) or a similar time coming in from Kentish Town/ West Hampstead in North London

AnonMJ · 12/05/2025 10:22

Ludgate Hill?! Ie in front of St Paul’s?
is she loaded?
my best mate lived there when we were in our 30s. Rented a room and shared a flat with another person in their 30s.

it’s a fabulous area but it’s £££. However. Can walk to work. No need to worry about expensive taxis getting home late at night.

however. They need to cut their cloth according to their means. That might mean not living there for another 10 years…..!

Ifailed · 12/05/2025 10:28

If she does move in, expect pleas from work-mates to stay overnight.

UneasyMe · 12/05/2025 10:33

He’s a student? You must have deep pockets, OP! Barbican, Clerkenwell, Bloomsbury, Bermondsey are all more lively and walking distance to LSE

No need to be so snippy. The OP has referred to her DC as both “DD” and “him”.

Dreamgazer · 14/05/2025 13:29

Thank you! You are now all my tribe. Super appreciate. Just to clarify and end the topic, my DD also wants to be with the boyfriend. So the ambivalence on gender. I kinda consider him my son too. Anyways, will tell them.
